Cougs offer Arizona receiver

WITH ONE VERBAL commitment from Arizona already in Mesa running back Marcus Richmond, Washington State is looking for more standouts from the Grand Canyon state to join the Crimson fold. The Cougs have offered Xavier Lucas, a tall wide receiver out of Tempe with 4.5 speed who does it all for McClintock High.

In addition to wide receiver, Lucas (6-4, 195) plays free safety, takes a few snaps at running back, returns kicks and also lines up as a speed rushing defensive end on third and long for McClintock. However, his calling at the next level will be at receiver.

"I don't really like playing the running back because I'm not really too fond of getting hit," he said with a laugh. "Receiver is the only thing I want to play in college. I love to score... and wide receiver gives me a chance to blow by people and show what I can do."

Besides Washington State, Lucas holds offers from UTEP, Colorado State and Wyoming, with Arizona State, Oregon, Oregon State, UCLA and others coming on strong.

Washington State, Arizona State, UTEP and Colorado State are Lucas' frontrunners. While those four are even, if ASU should offer the pull of playing for the local school might be too strong to resist.

"I feel comfortable with ASU and I think they're going to offer me," said Lucas. "Their wide receivers coach is a great coach, I've called him and talked to him a lot. Washington State has a great coaching staff and I think its a real good program. I think all the schools recruiting me have great coaches."

Lucas said the school he commits to will likely be the school that makes a strong commitment to him.

"Mostly its who wants me most and where I'm going to be taken care of the most," said Lucas, who went on to say UTEP and Washington State are recruiting the hardest. He has made plans for one official trip thus far, visiting UTEP and Mike Price October 22.

DESPITE CONSTANT DOUBLE teams and the fact McClintock has run the ball three times more than they've thrown it, Lucas has averaged 114.8 all purpose yards through four games. He has 11 receptions for 271 yards, an average of 24.64 yards a catch. He's also racked up 184 yards on kick returns.

From his free safety position, he's racked up 13 tackles including a sack. In the grading scale McClintock uses, he's second on the team defensively in points.

Lucas said he's a wide receiver that makes many of his yards after the catch. As a junior, he had 29 receptions for 593 yards and six touchdowns. He also had five sacks in his limited role at defensive end.

Lucas is a three sport star at McClintock, excelling in basketball and track for the Chargers.
