THE COUGARS have landed Colton, Calif., three star standout Jimmy Smith, a big defensive back with double digit offers to his credit. At 6-foot-2, Smith could play at a couple different spots on defense for WSU. And when he arrives in the state of Washington, Smith will be coming home in a sense. CF.C talked to Washington State's newest verbal pledge Wednesday afternoon and found out why WSU was the best fit for him.

Smith (6-2, 190) said the coaching staff at Washington State and how much the Cougs wanted him were two big reasons for his verbal commitment.

Defensive coordinator Robb Akey ran point on Smith's recruitment for the Cougs, and had an in-home visit with him last night.

"I committed to Washington State," Smith told "They said I could play either corner or safety, and just that they really wanted me. I don't have a preference."

WITH A COUPLE other standouts at Colton in Allen Bradford and Shareece Wright, Smith hasn't gotten as much press this season, but 10 offers speaks volumes.

Smith, who lived in Kent, Wash., while in elementary school, chose Washington State over Nebraska, Colorado, Boise State, Fresno State, Colorado State, UNLV, Hawaii, Nevada and Utah State. He will trip to Pullman on Jan. 13 and although he said he was solid, did not rule out trips to Colorado State and Hawaii.

THE BOOK ON Smith is he possesses excellent ball awareness, equally at ease bringing the house as he is going up in a crowd and taking the ball away.

Smith also has fluid hips for being as tall as he is. Manning the corner for Colton his senior campaign, Smith tallied 47 takedowns on a team that featured had three players with over 100 tackles apiece.

He also added two interceptions, a fumble recovery and an 11.4 yard average on punt returns.

The leading receiver on offense for Colton, Smith racked up 1,083 receiving yards on 45 receptions and was third on the team in both scoring and in all-purpose yards with an average of 112 yards a Friday night.

Smith is in good shape academically, having achieved a qualifying score on the SAT.
