VIDEO: Future Cougar Cornorris Atkins

A NUMBER OF schools made a late play for Cornorris Atkins, one of the reasons there wasn't as much of a buzz during the 2005-06 recruiting year on the 6-3, 205-pounder as there otherwise might have been. But when you see film on some of what he did his senior year at Grover High in Reseda, Calif., it's easy to see why the Cougs were thrilled to land the playmaker with 4.56 speed.

SPECIAL NOTE: Mark your calendars for this Wednesday, April 19, at 12 p.m. PT when Robb Akey, defensive coordinator for the Cougs, will be answering questions in the CF.C chat room during a lunchtime chat session. A subscription is required to access the Chat Room, which you can take out for a FREE 7-day test drive. Click here for membership options: CF.C Premium Access –- though the annual Total Access Pass is the best deal, both in terms of price and perks) The chat with Jeff McQuarrie, producer and director of an upcoming new 4-hour documentary about the colorful history of Cougar football has been rescheduled for the following Wednesday.

Atkins' recruitment didn't heat up until the last stages of the '06 recruiting year but eventually, schools like Washington State, Washington, Arizona, Arizona State, Oregon State, UCLA and others were all showing him plenty of love.

Most, save for WSU, Nevada and Utah State, held off offering a scholarship due to academic concerns. If he wasn't in a situation where he needed to make up grades from the 9th and 10th grades, it's a virtual lock the offers would have come both early and often.

Atkins, though, says he's doing everything he needs to do to take care of business and fully plans on being in Pullman to hit the turf with his Class of '06 teammates in August.

Atkins was an enforcer in the secondary last season, with 34 tackles and two interceptions. But what he really enjoys is playing receiver -- and getting into the end zone, which he did 12 times in 2005. He gained 320 yards on 25 receptions and added another 112 ground yards on 21 carries.
