Times' Withers files fitting Derting tribute

RIGHT TO THE END of his football career, writes Bud Withers of the Seattle Times, Will Derting seemed like something straight out of Hollywood, or maybe a Zane Grey novel. "One of the best players in Washington State history went back to the family ranch in Okanogan, there to live a life that he loves, rather than try to squeeze his body to play in the NFL," Withers noted in a column today saluting a kid the crimson faithful will never forget.

A balky knee got the best of him, as much as any running back ever did, wrote Withers. And when he made the decision to give up the game, the story wasn't broken by any big-city paper, it was in the Omak-Okanogan Chronicle, and that's entirely fitting. Click here for Withers' full story
