VERBAL COMMIT: Cougs land in-state RB

LOGWONE MITZ, son of late 80s Seattle Seahawk Alonzo Mitz and the No. 11-rated prep fullback in the nation, had a feeling he might pull the trigger early next week but upon reflection, there's no time like the present. Friday morning Mitz called up coaches Timm Rosenbach and Mike Walker and verbally committed to the Cougs, becoming Washington State's eighth known member of the 2007 class.

"I verbally committed to Washington State," Mitz told Cougfan.com. "It's always been one of my top schools. I was looking at Boise State like I said earlier but at the same time, I didn't want to lose the scholarship to one of my top schools, not knowing that what I'd find at the other school."

Mitz first got hold of Walker, the Cougars d-line coach.

"It was pretty early when I called him, I think I woke him up," said Mitz. "He texted me back and then I called back. He was surprised I think but he was excited."

Mitz did not completely rule out a trip to Boise State, however.

"Boise State still wanted me to come to on an official visit," said Mitz. "We were setting that up earlier this week but that didn't get set up, so I will probably take that."

At the same time, Mitz stressed that he considers himself a solid verbal.

"It feels very good," said Mitz. "I logged onto Scout and saw a couple 'soft verbals', but I'm very steady in saying I'm a verbally committed."

A soft verbal by Scout signifies a recruit who has verbally committed to one school, but has taken an official visit, or has firm plans for an official visit, to another school.

Mitz carried the pigskin 121 times for 731 yards in seven games his senior season, with a long of 75-yards. He was averaging 104.4 rushing yards and 10 points a game when he sprained the anterior talo-fibular ligament (ATFL) in his ankle, missing a couple final regular season games and Redmond's playoff loss.

Mitz is now back jogging and will probably be back to full strength in a couple of weeks.

Washington State offered Mitz after his performance at their youth camp earlier this summer. He is a yards-after-contact rusher with balance and vision, and some say he is a Dave Minnich clone.

With Mitz, Washington State has eight known verbal commitments in the 2007 class: WR Daniel Blackledge, DE Tyson Pencer, OL Andrew Roxas, DT B.J. Guerra, LB Tyson Kirksey, QB Kevin Lopina and OL Kevin Freitag. Note: Lopina is enrolled at WSU and practicing with the team but because he is ineligible to play this season after transferring from K-State, he is classified by Scout as part of the '07 class.
