Four-star safety tripping to WSU

TODD DOXEY has a four-star rating, double-digit offers, a qualifying score and is ranked the No. 23 safety prospect in the nation. The 6-2, 180-pounder out of San Diego with 4.6 speed says he's pretty much down to two. He will officially visit one of those schools, Washington State, this weekend.

Doxey said Oregon (Oct. 14 visit) is the frontrunner, but that Washington State has been coming on strong. Doxey said his visit to the Palouse will be a fact finding mission to see what the Washington State program is all about and that he could make a decision between the two schools a few days after the trip. Coach George Yarno is running the recruiting point for the Cougs.

"It's between Oregon and Washington State," said Doxey. "And then I guess there's a couple schools talking to me that might come into the picture -- Arizona State has been talking to me and Arizona contacted me."

Both schools see Doxey, who sports a 33-inch vertical leap, at free safety.

DISTANCE FROM HOME is a slight consideration but not much of a factor, he said. What will be important is the depth chart, among other considerations.

"Playing time, having the chance to play early. Redshirting is not a problem, but after that just seeing if I would have a chance to play, and obviously the education," said Doxey.

Doxey, who said he nearly committed to the Ducks following his October visit, said the playing time situation at Oregon is one of the things in the Ducks' favor.

"Their starting free safety is graduating this year, and in their secondary they have a lot of older guys. So it seems like I'd have an equal opportunity to play if I worked hard," he said.

Doxey has a 3.4 GPA and has achieved a qualifying score.

COMPLETE 2006 DEFENSIVE STATS were unavailable at press time although area newspapers raved about Doxey's play on both defense and offense his senior season, which just came to a close with a playoff loss this weekend. At Hoover High this year on offense, Doxey caught 76 receptions for 1,293 yards and 15 touchdowns.

"I know how to get to the ball," said Doxey. "Wherever the ball is, I'm usually right there if I'm not making the tackle. (On offense) I read defenses well and I think I'm a well rounded player."

As a junior, Doxey had 97 tackles, five interceptions, five forced fumbles and three defensive touchdowns. He was the league Defensive Player of the Year, first team all-San Diego Section and all-state underclass. At receiver, Doxey had 45 catches for 841 yards and nine touchdowns last season.
