Cougs and Devils in battle for Pellum

ROMEO PELLUM, one of the Cougar cornerback targets and fresh off an official visit to Arizona State, said he's moving ever closer to making a decision and it could possibly come this week. The two primary schools contending for his services are Washington State and ASU, and both will be coming by the next few days for all important in-home visits.

Pellum said he enjoyed the Tempe trip but he did not come close to making a verbal commitment on his official visit this weekend.

"No, no, no. They're going to come by this week, coach (Dennis) Erickson is on Tuesday. And then coach (Ken) Greene is going to come by tomorrow," said Pellum. "It went pretty good. I like the stadium, it's pretty big. I liked the players a lot."

Pellum said there are advantages to both WSU and ASU. He likes the thought of playing for a school in a college town like Pullman, but he also likes the town of Tempe.

"Pullman is smaller and Tempe is bigger, obviously. Tempe is more like L.A., but I think Washington State is out there and a real college school. There are a lot of differences between the two schools. I don't know, I'm just weighing my options. And I need to sit down more with my mom and my coach. The city, the school and the education are all -- I want to go someplace where I can get a good education without worrying about everything. And somewhere that I connect with the coaches and the players.

"And somewhere that I have a shot to play my true freshman year."

Greene, who was an All-American defensive back at Washington State and played eight years in the NFL after being picked as a first round draft choice, has formed a tight bond with Pellum, he said. In part, because he thinks Greene can help him follow in his footsteps.

"I like him a lot," said Pellum. "I think he can get me to where I want to be, which is the next level."

Another school on the fringe that could shuffle things up is Oregon, where his uncle, Don, is an assistant coach.

"Possibly I may visit them this weekend, I'm not sure yet," said Pellum, who has not been offered by the Ducks. "They've taken three corners already. At Washington State, I have a chance to go in and start my freshman year. ASU, they have more numbers but from what I hear, they're (players I can compete with)...I'm not going to redshirt, wherever I go."
