CHAT SUMMARY: Greg Peterson talks recruiting

THE CF.C LATE LUNCH chat session on Signing Day went into overtime, with WSU recruiting coordinator Greg Peterson answering questions from CF.C subscribers for over 75 minutes. Which new Cougars have the most potential to be impact players early? What did the parent of a Cougar signee tell a Pac-10 coach trying to get her son to switch his verbal away from Washington State? Plus a whole lot more!

CoachGregPeterson: GOOD AFTERNOON COUGAR NATION, LOOKING FORWARD TO TALKING FOOTBALL WITH YOU ALL.
COUGFANcom: Welcome Coach Peterson! Let's open it up for questions SocalCougFan: Mixon - work to do academically?
CoachGregPeterson: MIXON IS IN PRETTY GOOD SHAPE AND WILL BE HERE IN THE SUMMER.
SocalCougFan: nice

TheMFM: Can you give us more insight on the two new LBs?
CoachGregPeterson: HIGGINS AND ALEXANDER WILL BE GOOD PLAYERS FOR US AS THEY BOTH CAN RUN AND HIT.

sunnycoug: Who are some of the sleepers of the recruiting class? i.e. Lobbestael
CoachGregPeterson: HARD TO TELL WHO THE SLEEPERS ARE IN THIS CLASS AS WE LIKE ALL THE YOUNG MEN WHO SIGNED WITH US TODAY.

TheMFM: If any which JC players that signed today do you see starting for WSU next year?
ValhallaCoug: I LOVE BEING A COUGAR! I am 100% pleased with this class. You addressed all of our major concerns with talented and athletic players. Who do you expect to make an immediate impact?
WazzuIn02: Coach P, which guys do you see as being instant impact players with a chance to start in '07?
couggolf: Which of last year's recruits will have the biggest impact this coming year?
CoachGregPeterson: IMPACT GUYS FOR NEXT SEASON PROBABLY BEGINS WITH THE JR COLLEGE ATHLETES. LESUMA, FRISCHKNECHT, MIXON, ALEXANDER, FEAGIN, GILES

SocalCougFan: Are you expecting any more LOIs today?
CoachGregPeterson: WE HAVE ALL THE LOIs THAT WE WERE EXPECTING.

IndioCoug: Compare coaching at WSU vs. K-State and how do you see the future of our program. No one thought our basketball program had a chance, so I'll keep the faith.
CoachGregPeterson: WSU & KSU HAVE MANY SIMILARITIES BETWEEN THEM. GOOD PEOPLE WITHIN THE UNIVERSITY, RURAL SETTINGS, AND THE COUGS ARE MAKING A COMMITMENT TO OUR STADIUM WHICH IS IMPORTANT. WE NEED TO MAKE MARTIN STADIUM THE LOUDEST AND MOST DIFFICULT PLACE TO PLAY IN THE PAC 10. WHEN YOU ALL SELL IT OUT AND MAKE IT TOUGH ON OUR OPPONENTS, THERE IS A HUGE ADVANTAGE IN THE OUTCOME OF THE GAME.
TheMFM: We'll do our best to make it loud Coach P!

TheMFM: Does Mixon step in at SS or do you see him playing another role?
CoachGregPeterson: MIXON WILL PROBABLY BE A SAFETY FOR US. VERY TALENTED PLAYER!

IBC2991: No Tyson Kirksey then?
COUGFANcom: fyi: Coaches cannot comment on any recruit who has not yet signed a Letter of Intent.

ButchTCoug: Coach, what sort of 11th hour actions can/do the coaches take on guys like Pellum, who are being pulled in several directions?
CoachGregPeterson: PELLUM STAYED THE COURSE AND BECAME A COUG! DO NOT ALWAYS BELIEVE EVERYTHING WE HEAR ABOUT PLAYERS WAVERING.

LoudMouthSoup: Maybe shed some light on Marshal Pirtz and how you discovered this "under the radar" kid in central Idaho.
CoachGregPeterson: PIRTZ IS A YOUNG MAN WHO IS A VERY PHYSICAL PLAYER. HE ALSO IS AN OUTSTANDING WRESTLER SO IT WAS EASY TO LIKE HIM ON FILM AS WE WATCHED HIS SKILLS.

BlackOps: Coach P: Can we presume we got the two Coffey kids because of your longtime connections in Kansas?
CoachGregPeterson: THE COFFEYVILLE KIDS WERE RECRUITED BY COACH BURTNETT AND HIS LONG TIME TIES TO THE JC AND THE HEAD COACH.

cress: Coach, how accurate are the player evaluation and rankings of a service like Scout?
CoachGregPeterson: SCOUTING SERVICES DO A PRETTY GOOD JOB OF EVALUATING AND ARE VERY ACCURATE WHEN THEY EVALUATE THESE RECRUITS FILMS.

WazzuIn02: Tell us about the type of CBs we are getting in Justin and Pellum
CoachGregPeterson: JUSTIN AND PELLUM WILL BE VERY GOOD PLAYERS FOR WSU. THEY ARE BOTH TRACK ATHLETES WHO RUN VERY WELL. GOOD COVER SKILLS AND THE ABILITY TO BREAK ON THE BALL.

COUGFANcom: The head coach at Coffeyville told us today Giles runs a legit 4.25 in the 40. Coach, can you talk about his speed and what else makes him special.
CoachGregPeterson: GILES IS A YOUNG MAN WHO HAS A TREMENDOUS BURST TO THE BALL. I BELIEVE HE RAN 10.6 LAST SPRING IN THE 100 METERS.

LoudMouthSoup: Seems we went heavier to the JC's this year....any specific reason?
CoachGregPeterson: JC RECRUITING IS IMPORTANT TO OUR PROGRAM WHEN WE NEED TO FIND IMMEDIATE HELP AT A PARTICULAR POSITION. SEVEN SIGNEES WILL MAKE A SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE TO OUR BALL CLUB NEXT SEASON.

aywsu: Coach, how long was Coach Skipper's news known?
CoachGregPeterson: COACH SKIPPER'S OPPORTUNITY TO JOIN THE RAIDERS BECAME APPARENT THIS MORNING TO OUR STAFF. HE IS A VERY GOOD COACH & RECRUITER.

cress: How much did Akey leaving impact this class?
CoachGregPeterson: COACH AKEY WAS A TREMENDOUS COUGAR FOR A LOT OF SEASONS AT WSU. HE WILL DO AN EXCELLENT JOB FOR THE VANDALS!

BlackOps: Whatever happened to Chris Bush, the Puyallup kid who switch to WSU after an academic issue at Vandy. Is he in the program?
CoachGregPeterson: CHRIS BUSH HAD ACADEMIC ISSUES.

sunnycoug: How difficult is it to recruit against the likes of USC who can simply offer a schollie and take a verbal commitment from the Coug fold?
CoachGregPeterson: WE NEED TO CONTINUE TO WIN GAMES AND PLAY IN BOWL GAMES EACH SEASON TO HAVE A BETTER CHANCE TO KEEP ALL OF OUR COMMITS.

bson25: I can't remember the last five star recruit to become a Coug.... Is Mixon one of the frontrunners to take Frampton's spot?
CoachGregPeterson: MIXON IS AN OUTSTANDING YOUNG MAN WHO WILL HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY IN THE SECONDARY NEXT FALL.

As the TE coach, how do things look coming into spring ball? Will Jed Collins see a lot of reps at TE?
CoachGregPeterson: SPRING BALL IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR US TO MAKE IMPROVEMENT AT ALL POSITIONS. WE NEED TO HAVE A GOOD SPRING AND PREPARE FOR THE 07 SEASON. JED COLLINS WILL CONTINUE IN HIS ROLE AS TE AND WILL MAKE PLAYS FOR WSU.

who will be the new special teams coach?
CoachGregPeterson: SPECIAL TEAMS COACH HAS NOT BEEN DECIDED UPON AT THIS POINT IN TIME.

Are there any walk-ons who will be receiving scholarships?
CoachGregPeterson: THOMPSON & KENSOK RECEIVED SCHOLARSHIPS THIS SPRING.

Any guesses on which incoming HS players may not red-shirt and could see the field as true Freshmen?
Which of the high school kids could contribute right away?

CoachGregPeterson: DIFFICULT TO DETERMINE WHICH HS ATHLETES WILL CONTRIBUTE THIS NEXT FALL. KNOW THAT WE HAVE SOME GOOD CANDIDATES.

Where does Eric Block fit into the picture..? I assume he'll be redshirted next season??
CoachGregPeterson: ERIC BLOCK IS A FINE PLAYER WHO WILL BE IN THE DEFENSIVE SECONDARY. REDSHIRTING POLICY WILL BE DETERMINED NEXT FALL FOR OUR INCOMING PLAYERS. NEED TO SEE WHAT THEY ALL CAN DO FIRST.

Anyone besides Levenseller going to grayshirt?
CoachGregPeterson: GRAYSHIRTING WILL BE ESTABLISHED BETWEEN COACH DOBA AND OUR RECRUITS.

Which of the new recruits stands out as the type of player who will be a captain of the team?
CoachGregPeterson: MIXON IS A YOUNG MAN WHO HAS A PRESENCE TO LEAD YOUR TEAM. OTHERS WILL COME FORWARD AS WELL.

what position will Michael Willis play next year?
CoachGregPeterson: WILLIS IS TARGETED TO PLAY WR THIS SPRING.

<74Coug> Coach - Great job on this class, in spite of the defections. Who in the incoming class might be considered a "steal"...somebody that in 2 or 3 years will have others wondering why they passed on the prospect?
CoachGregPeterson: HOPEFULLY OUR CLASS WILL BE AN OUTSTANDING GROUP! TIME WILL TELL WHO WILL COME TO THE FRONT AND BECOME OUTSTANDING PLAYERS.

There was rumor a LB had a offered rescinded late was this to a JC player?
Coach, I noticed Joseph Easter is no longer listed as a commit. What happened there?
CoachGregPeterson: EASTER HAD OFF THE FIELD ISSUES WHICH LEAD US IN ANOTHER DIRECTION.

Is J.T. Diederichs still planning on attending WSU?
CoachGregPeterson: JT WILL NEED TO TAKE CARE OF ACADEMICS BEFORE HE MAY BE RECRUITED AGAIN.

How would you characterize the class overall?
CoachGregPeterson: WE BELIEVE THIS CLASS IS VERY ATHLETIC WITH OVER 75% OF THE SIGNEES BEING MULTI-SPORT ATHLETES. THE CLASS IS REALLY BALANCE AS WE HAVE MET OUR NEEDS AT ALL THE POSITIONS. ALTHOUGH WE HAD AN EMPHASIS IN THE SECONDARY WITH 8 RECRUITS.
What's your opinion on tend toward early offers and commits? What about an early signing like Bball?
CoachGregPeterson: EARLY SIGNING PERIOD FOR FOOTBALL MAY NOT BE TOO FAR AWAY. WOULD HELP PROGRAMS THAT LIKE TO EARLY OFFER.

Hi Coach, congrats on your first full year at the lead - class looks like some nice holes were addressed. What do you think has changed for the kids over the last year? By that I mean, what did you see new this year that others were using to recruit better or what did WSU do to better themselves over the last year?
CoachGregPeterson: RECRUITING AT WSU IS ALWAYS ABOUT THE PEOPLE AT OUR UNIVERSITY. OUTSTANDING FROM EVERY DEPARTMENT ON CAMPUS WITH INDIVIDUALS WHO REALLY CARE ABOUT YOUNG PEOPLE. I BELIEVE WE HAVE ONE OF THE BEST HEAD COACHES IN THE NATION AND A MAN WHO KNOWS HOW TO WORK WITH YOUNG PEOPLE. AS WE CONTINUE TO DEVELOP OUR FACILITIES/STADIUM, WE WILL BE ABLE TO COMPETE WITH THE REST OF OUR CONFERENCE FOR THE BEST PLAYERS.

Are you satisfied with the CB's that we signed? Do you anticipate any additional signing over the next few months to complete this class?
CoachGregPeterson: WE LIKE OUR GROUP OF DB'S THAT HAVE COMMITTED TO THE COUGS. WILL WE SIGN ANYONE ELSE? WE WILL SEE.

Which fish were you most disappointed to see get away this recruiting season?
CoachGregPeterson: PLAYERS THAT DID NOT STAY WITH THEIR COMMITMENT TO BECOME A COUGARS, WE ARE BETTER OFF NOT HAVING THEM IN OUR PROGRAM.

What are one or two top reasons why these kids chose WSU?
CoachGregPeterson: WHY DO PLAYERS CHOOSE WSU? OUTSTANDING PEOPLE AND TRADITION!

Any chance Ivory Clark turns out for the football program next season?
CoachGregPeterson: IVORY CLARK WILL HELP US CONTINUE TO HAVE AN OUTSTANDING BASKETBALL SEASON. WHO KNOWS WHAT NEXT FALL WILL BRING.

ValhallaCoug: How did the coaching changes affect the recruiting season?
CoachGregPeterson: COACHING CHANGES MAY HAVE IMPACTED ONE PLAYER. aywsu: Vasquez?
CoachGregPeterson: YES TO VASQUEZ.
couggolf: Coach, what should we expect at the kicker position next year, do we have any known "walk-ons" coming in?
Wazzu_Coug: Coach, any word on our kicking game especially PAT kicker?
CoachGregPeterson: WE LIKE OUR KICKERS AND KNOW THAT WE WILL HAVE A BATTLE BETWEEN OUR TOP TWO THIS SPRING.

Cougman86: Coach, do you foresee any position changes this year for recruits from last years class? Chris Ivory to LB or any others?
CoachGregPeterson: POSITION CHANGES FROM LAST YEARS CLASS WILL BE DETERMINED THIS SPRING. IVORY IS A YOUNG MAN WHO WILL BE A VERY GOOD PLAYER FOR WSU. LB'ER OR RB, HE WILL BE AN IMPACT PLAYER. (Editor's note: Bill Doba said later in the day that Ivory will return to running back in spring ball with the influx of linebackers in this class and with the Cougs deciding to sign only one RB, Mitz, in this class)

ValhallaCoug: I remember being excited about Skylar Jessen a year ago, do you feel he'll see some time on Special teams this year?
CoachGregPeterson: SKYLAR WILL HAVE ON OPPORTUNITY TO PROVE HIMSELF THIS SPRING.

WazzuIn02: Coach, can you talk a bit about our o-line commits? Differentiate between them...which guys are strong in which areas? Thanks.
CoachGregPeterson: WE LIKE OUR O-LINE COMMITS AND ANTICIPATE AN IMMEDIATE IMPACT FORM THIS GROUP.

couggolf: I know you can't discuss any particular recruits, but is the number of signees that may not qualify over or under 3?
CoachGregPeterson: ACADEMIC ISSUES ARE VERY FEW WITH THIS GROUP OF SIGNEES.
KeenanCoug: excellent to hear

KeenanCoug: What is the first thing you do starting tomorrow with LOI coming to close?
CoachGregPeterson: WE ARE ALREADY IN THE PROGRESS RECRUITING NEXT YEARS CLASS. WILL ALSO WORK ON OUR OFF/DEF/SPECIAL TEAMS AND EVALUATE ALL OF OUR GAMES FROM LAST SEASON.

bigskycoug: Can you tell us who some of the top in-state recruiting targets will be for 08?
COUGFANcom: fyi - coaches cannot comment on any recruit who has not yet signed a Letter of Intent.
CoachGregPeterson: IF THE COUGAR NATION KNOWS OF ANY 08 RECRUITS PLEASE SHARE THEM WITH US. NCAA RULES PROHIBIT US FROM COMMENTING ON NEXT YEARS PLAYERS.
aywsu: How can we share them with you, get them to send you tapes?
CoachGregPeterson: PLEASE CONTACT OUR FOOTBALL OFFICE AND SHARE THEM WITH OUR COACHING STAFF.

IBC2991: Can you comment on players coming off injuries? Jason Stripling? Michael Willis? Etc.
CoachGregPeterson: STRIPLING AND WILLIS SHOULD BOTH BE BACK AND IN GREAT SHAPE FOR THE COUGS.
ValhallaCoug: Will we see Brink start at quarterback or will we see a showdown this spring for the starting role between Brink and Rogers?
sunnycoug: What is the plan with all the QBs, we signed 3 this year had have a pretty healthy stable of QBs already on the roster?
CoachGregPeterson: THE QB POSITION HAS TREMENDOUS DEPTH. BRINK, ROGERS, LOPINA, ETC ARE ALL VERY GOOD PLAYERS.
ValhallaCoug: If today you had to chose, Brink the leader, or Rogers the phenom?
CoachGregPeterson: TOUGH QUESTION! BOTH ARE VERY TALENTED PLAYERS AND GREAT YOUNG MEN.

couggolf: Which of our newest recruits is considered the most "underrated" in regards to the recruiting services evaluations?
CoachGregPeterson: WE TRY TO RECRUIT THE BEST POSSIBLE ATHLETES THAT FIT OUR SYSTEM.

bson25: Is Dewayne Patterson going to be eligible for next season? Where do you think he would be on the depth chart if he is eligible?
CoachGregPeterson: PATTERSON IS WORKING VERY HARD TO BE ABLE TO RETURN TO THE FIELD FOR NEXT SEASON.

aywsu: how many spots do you think we will recruiting next year?
CoachGregPeterson: DEPENDING ON GRADUATION, INJURIES, ETC WE WOULD ANTICIPATE A FAIRLY LARGE CLASS FOR 08.

WazzuIn02: How does the process of offering a player happen? Does it only take one coach, or does everyone have to agree?
CoachGregPeterson: WE TRY TO EVALUATE EACH PLAYER AS AN ENTIRE COACHING STAFF. COACH DOBA WILL MAKE THE OFFER IF WE ARE ALL IN AGREEMENT.

BlackOps: What positions will you be emphasizing in the next class of recruits and how many offers have you made already?
CoachGregPeterson: WE ARE A YOUNG FOOTBALL TEAM AT A LOT OF POSITIONS GOING INTO SPRING FOOTBALL AND NEXT SEASON. TO DETERMINE OUR NEEDS AT THIS TIME MAY NOT BE ACCURATE. WE HAVE MADE A FEW EARLY OFFERS AT THIS POINT IN TIME FOR NEXT YEARS CLASS.

cress: Does playing games like Auburn and Wisconsin help or hurt recruiting?
CoachGregPeterson: PLAYING EXCELLENT FOOTBALL TEAMS IN NON CONFERENCE ASSISTS US IN PREPARING FOR THE PAC 10 AND ALSO MAY HELP US IN RECRUITING AS WSU PLAYS TOUGHER OPPONENTS

bson25: How did Mattingly look at LB last year? I know he was a special teams monster and was hoping to see him as a possible starter next year
CoachGregPeterson: MY APOLOGIES FOR NOT ANSWERING THE QUESTION ON MATTINGLY. HE WILL BE AN IMPACT PLAYER AS WELL AS CLARK. KNOW THAT THERE ARE OTHERS.

ValhallaCoug: How many graduates do you think will go pro this year?
CoachGregPeterson: WE MAY HAVE 7 OR 8 SENIORS WHO MAY RECEIVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY PRO BALL.

BlackOps: Before I forget, it's very very cool of you to take the time to talk with all of us like this. Thank you.
IndioCoug: I would like to echo BlackOps. Thanks coach
CoachGregPeterson: THANK YOU ALL FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO VISIT THIS AFTERNOON. THE COUGAR NATION HAS GREAT FANS!
couggolf: Thanks Coach!!!
cress: Thanks Coach!!!
KeenanCoug: Thanks Coach! See you on Friday at the Doba Dinner!
bigskycoug: Thanks Coach Peterson! Best of luck next season
COUGFANcom: Coach Peterson, thank you for all your valuable insights and for being so generous with your time. Truly a pleasure.

cress: How do future NCAA penalties for low grad rates (lose of schollies) impact recruiting? Will schools have to pass on academic risks?
CoachGregPeterson: NCAA REQUIREMENTS FOR KEEPING PLAYERS ELIGIBLE AND ON TARGET TO GRADUATE WILL HAVE AN IMPACT ON PROGRAMS IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF YEARS. VERY IMPORTANT THAT WE NOT ONLY RECRUIT GOOD PLAYERS,BUT ATHLETES THAT PERFORM WELL IN THE CLASSROOM.

Cougman86: Do you foresee any other players grayshirting in this class besides Levenseller? What happened to Pflugrad's son?
CoachGregPeterson: DO NOT KNOW WHERE PFLU'S SON COMMITTED. DEFENSIVE/OFFENSIVE LEADERS ARE BEING DEVELOPED IN THE OFF SEASON IN WINTER CONDITIONING AND SPRING BALL.
ValhallaCoug: Pflugrad committed to Oregon I believe.

Lynchmob08: coach Peterson i was wondering has there been any dialogue between the program and school to get kids eligible for academic reasons, for example the requirements to get into school
CoachGregPeterson: THE NCAA DETERMINES THE BASE-LINE REQUIREMENTS FOR ELIGIBILITY. WSU HAS OUR OWN SET OF STANDARDS.

TheMFM: Since you are involved with the Passing game can you give us insight on who is going to step up next year? i am expecting big seasons from Gibson and Bumpus.
CoachGregPeterson: WE BELIEVE THAT OUR PASSING WILL CONTINUE TO EXCEL. OUR QBS RETURN, BUMPUS/GIBSON WILL HAVE BIG CONTRIBUTIONS TO OUR OFFENSE.

Lynchmob08: coach i was wondering if Finas Rabb with see more reps this season
CoachGregPeterson: RABB NEEDS TO CONTINUE TO DEVELOP IN THE WEIGHT ROOM AND WHEN HE DOES ADD THE NEEDED STRENGTH AND SIZE HE WILL BE A GOOD PLAYER.

TheMFM: What about Anthony Houston? Will he get much playing time this year?
CoachGregPeterson: HOUSTON HAS THE ABILITY TO BE A CONTRIBUTOR NEXT SEASON. NEEDS TO IMPROVE LIKE FINAS IN THE WEIGHT ROOM.

Lynchmob08: will Terry Mixon be starting next year
CoachGregPeterson: MIXON WILL HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO BE AN EXCELLENT PLAYER FOR THE COUGS.

TheMFM: Do you see the JC Dlinemen we brought in playing right away? I'm worried about our ends with the graduation of Mkristo Bruce.
TheMFM: Will Jesse Feagin be the frontrunner for MK's old position?
CoachGregPeterson: WE LIKE THE SIZE & STRENGTH OF GUERRA. FEAGIN WILL GIVE US A DE WITH EXCELLENT SIZE AND STRENGTH TO RUSH THE QB.

WazzuIn02: Were there any funny stories during the recruiting season you'd like to pass along? Any of the NLI signers get everyone laughing, etc.?
CoachGregPeterson: GREAT STORY FROM J ANDERSON'S MOTHER. ANOTHER PAC 10 SCHOOL WAS TRYING TO GET HIM TO CHANGE HIS COMMITMENT AND JESHUA'S MOTHER STATE THAT A VERBAL COMMITMENT IS LIKE AN ENGAGEMENT AND THE LETTER OF INTENT IS LIKE MARRIAGE. OPPOSING COACH HAD NO RESPONSE.

CoachGregPeterson: ANY MORE QUESTIONS?
ValhallaCoug: Thank you for answering all of my questions, Coach!
KeenanCoug: Thanks again Coach... this has been great and makes us feel even more connected to WSU Football.
COUGFANcom: Coach Peterson, thank you for all your valuable insights and for being so generous with your time. Truly a pleasure.
CoachGregPeterson: THANK YOU FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO VISIT WITH THE COUGAR NATION.
GREG PETERSON, WSU FOOTBALL

COUGFANcom: Thanks everyone for making this a great chat session
