Throughout May, Benny Ward and Anthony Houston showed great effort and intensity -- we threw 2-3 times a week. And on the days we weren't throwing, we watched film.
Kevin and I also worked on foot drills throughout the month.
This is going to be my fourth summer in Pullman and I couldn't be more excited about this one.
Coach O (WSU Strength and Conditioning coach Rob Oviatt) has put together some really good workouts for the team and will continue to push each and every one of us. We have a really tight-knit team and I look forward to the things we will accomplish this summer, and this upcoming season.
We are going into our third week of summer workouts, but it sure doesn't feel like summer yet out on the Palouse.
We experienced snow -- yes, SNOW -- in June, when the average daily temperature in Pullman during the month is 72 degrees. We had to actually alter one of our running workouts due to that but luckily, the weather looks to be getting better.
Here is a very brief overview of some of the things we've been doing -- I don't want to go into too much detail, but we try to do a lot of the stuff you can't do during the season.
We'll concentrate on the upper body one day through a variety of lifts, drills and exercises. And then we'll hit the field to run through some intense circuit drills, and then head back at the weights to pump some more iron. Other times, the focus is on building the lower body strength and getting in all of our running that we do. And plenty more circuit work as well.
Some days are heavier lifting days than others. And our core strength workouts, and balance drills, are also very important parts of our summers.
There's also a time apart from our normal schedule where we're getting together as players and doing drills in Martin Stadium on our own. Then later this summer we'll be getting together to do skelly drills, typically 7-on-7 drills without the linemen.
We have only just begun our summer training. Our team this year is working extremely hard and we're looking really good right now. The guys are eager to work hard and are getting better each and every day.
I look forward to keeping you all posted on the upcoming weeks. If have you have questions you'd like me to address in my next player diary, just post them on the Cougfan.com message board and I'll try to answer as many as I can.
Thanks, GO COUGS!
