Bellevue safety has good crimson vibe

WASHINGTON STATE HAS two Bellevue High alums on the roster and has offered a third in the current recruiting class. Jamal Atofau (5-10, 185, 4.52) is a hard hitting safety with speed, two Pac-10 offers plus an ambitious camp and unofficial visit schedule. He's also feeling a good crimson vibe.

Recruiting is, to name a few, about relationships with coaches, facilities, distance and the prospects for playing time.

It's also about things not as easily quantified -- the intangibles.

"The Cougs, I just get a vibe from them, I just feel real good about them," said Atofau.

Atofau has offers from WSU and Arizona. Washington State continues to send handwritten letters, he said, and Arizona has been keeping in close contact.

"I'm really interested in the Cougs, and the Cougs are really strong. And not only that, I have (Eric) Block and Keith Rosenberg there," said Atofau.

But Atofau also, he said, remains wide open and doesn't anticipate making a decision anytime soon.

ATOFAU RECENTLY TOOK a swing through the state of Oregon and participated in both an Oregon State camp and a NIKE event. Atofau said Oregon subsequently sent him an email that they would talk about a possible scholarship offer in the near future. Oregon State mentioned similar.

"Oregon State was pretty much positive, the head coach, everybody there was positive," said Atofau. "They really liked me, they liked my footwork and stuff. And they liked my film. It was a good experience because they made us cover receivers in different positions, like eight yards off. Their head coach was giving me hints here and there (about offering) so we'll see.

"I got defensive back MVP at the NIKE camp."

Atofau also said the Beavers over the last month have been recruiting the hardest.

"Right now, I'm thinking that's Oregon State. They're really consistent even though they haven't offered me," said Atofau.

FUTURE CAMP PLANS include events at Washington State, Washington, Boise State and UCLA, if he can fit them all in.

Bellevue also has a well developed offseason program, with Atofau and others participating in a recent scrimmage against Burien's Kennedy High.
