Cougs get another verbal

THE FIFTH KNOWN football prospect to verbally commit to Washington State is Landon Ellis, a 6-1, 220-pound athlete from Fresno who projects as a defensive end.

PacWest football reported today that Ellis' father, Gary, announced that his son cast his lot with WSU after taking his official visit to Pullman this past weekend.

"Ellis impressed us with his speed and athleticm at the NorCal Nike Camp where he clocked a 4.56 in the 40 and jumped 28 inches in the vertical," said PacWest.

Through 10 games this year, Ellis had 45 tackles including 25 for loss to go with eight quarterback sacks playing defensive end and fullback. He camped at Cal over the summer and was the MVP of the linebackers there.

The Cougars are said to be drooling over his potential as a rush end. Ellis also was drawing serious interest from Washington, Cal, Utah and others.

Ellis joins four others on the known verbal list for WSU's 2003 class of recruits. The others are offensive linemen Bobby Byrd of Oceanside, Calif., and highly coveted Patrick Afif of Orange Coast JC; and a pair of swifties from Canyon Spring High in Moreno Valley, Calif., --- defensive back/receiver Christian Bass and linebacker/safety Reyshawn Bobo.
