Make 'em miss RB has Palouse visit plans

AN ALL-CIF prep running back out of California, with a shot to reach the 5,000 career yard mark before the curtain comes down on his prep career, has an official visit planned to the Palouse this weekend. With a habit of making the first guy miss and then running through or outrunning the rest of 'em, he's built low to the ground. But he's not small.

Carl Winston (5-9, 205, 4.49) has some heft to him for a high school player. Out of Gardena, just outside of L.A., he received a Washington State offer last week. WSU assistant Steve Broussard also set up plans for Winston's official visit to Wazzu at the same time.

"He sounds like a pretty good guy, I'm going up there on a trip on Nov. 8 so I'll have a better chance to get more acquainted with him and the other coaches then," said Winston.

Winston said Washington State and Broussard have been recruiting him since before the May Evaluation period and wanted to see more of his senior year before offering.

"(Broussard) tells me he's pretty picky when it comes to running backs. He was such a good running back when he was in college so..he's looking for someone to measure up. And that's always good, the challenge," said Winston.

Winston this season for undefeated Junipero Serra High has 1,087 yards on 137 carries in eight games, for an average of 135.9 yards per with 13 rushing TDs. Coming into his senior season, his career rushing total had stood at 3,300 yards.

WINSTON SAID WSU likes his speed, quickness and vision.

"They also said they love how I can make the first guy miss, and then also how I can break tackles," said he said. "It takes five players to tackle me sometimes."

A versatile athlete, he also had a good pair of hands catching passes out of the backfield and could fit into the kickoff return game at the next level as well. He has 18 receptions for 258 yards this season, with another four scores this season.

TIMETABLE-WISE, WINSTON said he'll likely wait until after the season when can take more trips before making his decision.

In addition to Wazzu, he holds offers from Colorado, New Mexico and San Jose State. He said UCLA, Fresno State and Colorado State could be getting close to offering, and Washington is also in the mix.

Colorado State could also be close, he said, while UCLA, Fresno State and Washington have all been showing him the recruiting love.
