Salt Lake RB breaks bread with WSU

SEVEN WASHINGTON STATE assistant coaches have been on the recruiting trail since the in-home visit period began this week. One prospect who broke bread with a Wazzu coach, a prolific prep running back who rushed for nearly 2,000 hashes this season -- and he's high on the Cougars.

RB Isi Sofele, (5-7, 175)
Cottonwood High; Salt Lake City, UT

Who, what, when on WSU in-home visit:
"Washington State, Jody Sears, came by (Tuesday). It went pretty good -- we sat down and had dinner with him, we fed him a little bit," said Sofele.

More detail:
"He stayed over for probably an hour and a half. We talked about Wazzu and (academics), how many athletes graduate from Wazzu and things like that. It was good stuff," said Sofele.

Dad's take on WSU in-home visit:
"My dad really likes coach Sears and likes what he's hearing so far about the program. He likes how they're disciplined, how they're on top of everything and how the academics are on the team," said Sofele.

Has he officially tripped to WSU:
Yes, official visit was on 10.18.2008

Other home visits set up:
"SMU is coming in (today)...I just like the coaching staff, they're good guys up there and they know how to treat players. And I like the campus, it's pretty nice up there," said Sofele.

Cougs high atop his leaders list:
"It's kinda those two (WSU and SMU), but (also) kinda leaving my options open," said Sofele. (He also has offers from Utah, Kansas State, Hawaii and Washington).

Where he goes from here:
Sofele said he plans on taking an official visit to SMU sometime in January*, estimated visit date of 1/9, could change or be solidified pending SMU in-home visit.

Decision timetable:
"I'm not getting close. I want to do it, but I'm not sure so I'm going to wait it out and see what's best for me," said Sofele.

Senior season:
Sofele helped lead his team to the 4A state championship game, rushing for 1,916 yards on 259 carries this season with 32 touchdowns. He also had appx. 300 receiving yards, and another five receiving touchdowns. In the state championship, he rushed for 194 yards and two touchdowns on two carries as Cottonwood came up just short, 34-28.

Final thought:
At 5-7, 175 pounds, Sofele is a running back with quick moves and change of direction. He told CF.C previously that college coaches offering a scholie had ticked off a list of attributes they liked that sounded like an apt description of "The Ghost", otherwise known as Cougar All-American Jerome Harrison, who led the Pac-10 in rushing yards with 1,900 hashes (2nd in nation) in '05.
