All-state linebacker reflects on WSU weekend

DARREN MARKLE, future Cougar and newly named first team all-state linebacker out of Idaho, spent a good portion of his official visit to Pullman this past weekend bonding with the guys he's going to be spending time with the next few years at Washington State.

Gut reaction to the official trip:
"It was great. I got to meet with all the coaches a little bit (more) and it was cool because we all got to meet the recruits and start bonding. Most of us were already was great to start seeing the guys you're going to play with for the next four years," said Markle.

On the group there this weekend and how well they all got along:
"That's important because you're going to be hanging out with them for four years. I'm excited to play with them. The big thing I noticed, and the coaches said too, the group that came this weekend was a group of really smart players -- they know how to play the game of football," said Markle.

Sitting down with linebackers coach Travis Niekamp and breaking down film:
"There was a couple times we got to hang out and then one time specifically where it was a position meeting with your it was just one on one with me and coach Niekamp where he talked about what his defensive philosophy was, showed me how they did some things on defense. And we watched a little bit of film and studied.

Sunday breakfast at coach Paul Wulff's house and checking out the head man's Cougar room:
"He showed us the Cougar room he has in his house with all his Cougar memorabilia and that was really cool...he had all the old pictures from when he was playing. And a bunch of the WSU coaches are in them," said Markle.

Markle was on Sunday named first team 5A all-state at linebacker. He helped guide Mountain View to its first state playoff victory this season and racked 101 tackles all told, with four forced fumbles, two sacks an interception and two blocked extra points. Thirteen of his tackles were for loss.
