WASHINGTON STATE CONTINUES to make recruiting news right on through the final hours leading up to Signing Day. The latest to pledge crimson is a hulking junior college defensive end who put up some crooked sack and tackle numbers indeed blasting off the edge this past season on his way to JC All-America honors.

Brandon Rankin will make it official tomorrow -- he's Wazzu-bound.

"I'm signing with Washington State," said Rankin, a 4-star rated prospect and JC All-American.

As a sophomore this season for Butte, reported Rankin posted 24 sacks amongst his 62 tackles and was named CCCFCA JC All-America, Region I Defensive Player of the Year and All-California first team.

Rankin saw interest this recruiting season from a variety of suitors. But it was Paul Wulff, co-defensive coordinator Jody Sears and crew who made the difference.

"It was the coaching staff," said Rankin. "And the players -- I got a nice vibe while I was there (on the visit). They're guys I would like to play with.

"LSU offered me to redshirt, Louisville offered, Marshall offered, couple others," said Rankin.

Rankin says he'll be playing defensive end for the Cougars.

"They said they needed some guys on the d-line who can make plays," said Rankin. "...And they liked how I played, my pass rush ability."

Rankin cuts an imposing figure on the d-line -- 6-foot-5 and 260 pounds -- and appears to have a personality to match.

"I like coming off the edge, going one on one with the offensive tackle and then going for the quarterback. I like making plays in the backfield."

Rankin says he has work to do but plans on receiving his AA degree later this year.

"It's looking good as long as I take care of these classes..They have a nice fan base and a nice atmosphere. It's a nice college town, and that's what I want in a college -- a college experience.

Rankin said Butte wide receiver Josh Bellamy, whom the Cougars have also offered, remains undecided and may not make up his mind until tomorrow when he's standing at the fax machine.

"He's back and forth...We'll find out tomorrow," said Rankin.
