'But will the Coug game be on TV'?

JUNE IS WHEN the television networks start to fill their college football season schedule. Early indications for the upcoming season are A) the networks are going toward more of a "flex" schedule for the Pac-10 slate, and B)that WSU fans wanting to watch Cougar football games might want to plan on seeing those contests in person.

Games selected for broadcast generally fall into three windows -- early June for national picks, June-July-August for regional or institutional picks, and 12- and 6-day windows prior to the game during the season.

A quick check reveals that for the first time in recent memory, not a single Washington State (or Washington) football game was an early selection for national broadcast by league television partner Fox Sports Net.

Cougar games will still be picked up by FSN, and ABC/ESPN also remain possibilities. The networks this year have kept open a larger than normal bank of 12- or six day window selections before the game, indicating a desire to work more flexibility into the scheduling based on how the season plays out.

Additional WSU games could also be selected in the coming weeks and months for regional or institutional broadcast.

Versus, which will broadcast five Pac-10 games, will make all of their selections this season during the 12-day windows, a change from last year when the carrier selected their slate earlier.

At this early stage, just how many Wazzu games ultimately end up on the tube is anyone's guess at this point. But the non-selection of WSU and UW games for national broadcast at this stage is notable.

Last year at this time, Washington State had four games as early broadcast pickups. The Cougs ended up having their first eight games broadcast, with nine of 13 games ultimately shown on TV. Those not selected for televised broadcast were late season games with Stanford, Arizona, ASU and Hawaii.

This year, only the Oct. 31 tilt with Notre Dame in San Antonio has thus far been scheduled, on NBC. (The USC has not yet been officially picked up, despite a report to the contrary, though it is pretty much a lock.)

Notable notes on Cougar football season tickets for 2009:
-- As of May 14, WSU had sold 10,800 season tickets for the Cougars' five games that will be played in Martin Stadium this fall.

-- The price for season-ticket sideline seats is $200, down from last season's $280.

-- Priority Seating Requirements in all donation-required sections remained unchanged for the third consecutive season.

-- If personal finances have become a burden, newly added "Value Sections" have been added to the mix, with season tickets just $125 in Sections 11-12 and 21-23.

-- Within those Value Sections, a "Value Plan." consisting of four season tickets can be purchased for $425.

-- Value Plans are different from Family Plans, in that the tickets are not restricted to youths -- anyone can use the four tickets in a Value Plan.

-- WSU's home slate opens with Stanford on Sept. 5 and is followed by Southern Methodist on Sept. 19, Arizona State on Oct. 10 (Homecoming), UCLA on November 14 (Dads Day), and Oregon State on Nov. 21. A sixth game, Washington State vs. Hawaii, is Sept. 12 at Qwest Field in Seattle.
