Honorary captain Mackay to raise Cougar flag

ONE COUGAR NOTABLE will be named an honorary captain at each Wazzu home game this season and the same holds true for the Cougs' home game at Qwest. The identity of the honorary captain is generally be kept quiet until game day, when he will emerge from the tunnel and onto the field prior to the game. But not this time.

Cory Mackay is the honorary WSU captain for the game in Seattle vs. Hawaii.

Mackay and his parents will be on the field, and Cory will raise the Cougar flag before kickoff.

Mackay, a promising redshirt freshman defensive end ticketed to start this year, was seriously injured in a May highway accident following the conclusion of spring ball and exams.

The honorary captains concept is part of coach Paul Wulff's continuing efforts to build the connections between past and current Cougars.

Mackay told CF.C earlier he's taking 12 WSU credits on-line this semester and "definitely" will return to Pullman for Washington State's spring semester, which begins in January.

Mackay has been paralyzed below the waist since he apparently fell asleep at the wheel and overturned his pickup truck on his way home from WSU for spring break after final exams and spring ball.

Mackay remains hopeful he can walk again, and he remains listed on WSU's official roster and on CF.C's.
