BREAKING: Cougs land verbal No. 11

HE'S AN ATHLETIC guy that loves to hit. And he's a physical DB-type that loves to run and has very good range -- all things Washington State needs. And he just went crimson. He becomes WSU's 11th known verbal commitment -- the earliest WSU has ever stocked so many into the cupboard, and he becomes the third from the Cougs' first official visit weekend to pledge Wazzu.

Alameda's Tyrone Duckett (5-11, 186, 4.6) is Washington State bound.

"I talked to coach (Chris) Ball and I told him it was just that time. I just needed things to settle down (post-visit) -- I feel I can contribute and Washington State is the perfect place for me to continue my football career," said Duckett, out of Encinal High.

Duckett said he came to that conclusion in large part because of the family atmosphere and because he believes Washington State is on the right path.

"That family vibe -- that really captured me," said Duckett. "Everyone there was just one. That was big for me, because (Encinal) is all about being a family."

DUCKETT SAID assistant Chris Ball was one of several compelling factors in his decision to verbal to WSU.

"That whole coaching staff, they are up-tempo and I really just wanted to be part of that... Coach Ball is great. He's a guy who knows what he's doing and I'm going to love being coached by him. He's up-tempo and he loves coaching, and I love to be around that kind of coach," said Duckett.

AS A JUNIOR this past season, Duckett racked up 69 tackles and batted away eight passes despite playing behind senior safety and East Bay Player of the Year Jonathan Brown, who signed with Boise State this past February.

Offensively in '08, Duckett had 595 yards with eight touchdowns on 90 carries, with another 10 catches for 126 yards and four TDs. Encinal posted a perfect 13-0 record and won the North Coast Section Division III title in 2008.

Duckett is likely ticketed for defense at WSU but he's running the show under center for Encinal this season -- the senior quarterback rushed for 85 yards and two scores this past weekend in Encinal's season opener.

Duckett becomes the 11th known verbal in Washington State's 2010 class. The others are ATH Deone Bucannon, TE Asante Cleveland, WR Blair Bomber, ATH Brandon Golden, QB Connor Halliday, TE Aaron Dunn, DE/OL Jake Rodgers, OT John Fullington, cornerback Matt Simmons and DB Damante Horton.
