Family feel a big draw for RB

WASHINGTON STATE IS in the market for running backs in the '10 class and one who holds a crimson offer is a prep prospect out of the Bay Area putting together a productive senior year. And while he hasn't made his choice yet, he knows what he's looking for in a school and football program.

Adonis Smith out of Junipero Serra High of San Mateo, Calif., about 20 minutes outside of San Francisco, is looking for something specific in a college and football program.

"I'm looking for campus life, I don't want to be at a place where I get lost. I want to be in an environment where the campus is friendly and everyone knows everyone," said Smith.

SMITH, RATED THREE stars and the No. 60 RB prospect in the country, holds offers from WSU, Utah, Northwestern and others and is hearing from them plus schools like Minnesota, Fresno State and Arizona State on a regular basis.

"There are a lot of schools calling me a lot now," said Smith, who added that he talks weekly with Harold Etheridge at Washington State. "I just talked to coach Etheridge at Washington State...we talked a little bit about football and life, just getting a feel for how I am as a person and not just as an athlete."

Smith said he might set up some official visits during the season but will "more than likely" be taking the bulk of his trips after his season is over.

SMITH IS PUTTING together a solid season at Junipero Serra.

He has rushed for 260 and 268 yards his past two games, with 754 total hashes on 107 carries in four games with six rushing touchdowns.

At his present pace of 188.5 yards a game, he would be near his goal of a 2,000 yard season by the time his 10-game regular season comes to a close.

"(College coaches) like my speed and my vision, the way I can cut," said Smith. "I'm just going to keep on progressing."

As a junior, Smith was a backup but still averaged over seven yards a carry with 644 yards on 90 touches with eight touchdowns, leading all juniors in scoring in the WCAL.
