PHOTO MAYHEM: Cougar hoops up close

ON A NIGHT OF high-flying fun, no one flew higher than Marcus Capers. The sophomore guard's handiwork Friday in Washington State's "Midnight Mayhem" basketball kickoff was so spectacular that Cougar women's assistant coach Mo Hines said the kid could enter the NBA's annual dunking contest -- and win. He was completely serious, too.

Capers' first offering began by throwing the ball off of the backboard, catching it in midair, and throwing down a wind-mill dunk that brought a packed Bohler Gym to its feet.

In the finals, between Capers and a widly entertaining Brock Motum, Capers jumped high in the air, slammed the ball down with authority, and got his elbow inside the rim. Reminiscent of Vince Carter at his finest, teammates swarmed Capers and the crowd went wild.

Here's a broader look at Friday night's events through the eyes of the camera lens...
