Cougar youth can't stop Cal

THE COUGARS SHOWED some offensive life in the second quarter, with Jeff Tuel throwing for 232 yards and a pair of TD's in the first 30 minutes, but the youth of Washington State could not hang with the veteran California Bears and Wazzu dropped a 49-17 decision in Strawberry Canyon.

Unofficially, Jeff Tuel finished 28-of-41 for 355 yards with two scores. Johnny Forzani (68 yards) and Gino Simone (19 yards) were on the receiving end of the scoring strikes. Washington State running backs however found little success against Cal with an injury riddled Cougar offensive line up front, WSU backs midway through the fourth quarter had carried the ball only 15 times, with Carl Winson the leading ground gainer with 51 hashes.

The Cougar special teams and defense were outmatched and outgunned and it began early on -- the Cougs dug themselves a 28-3 hole before time had run out in the first quarter, one of the scores coming on a 76 yard punt return by Cal. The score at halftime was 35-17

We'll have more later on.
