No Cougar Qwest game in 2010, but back in '11

WASHINGTON STATE will not play a home football game at Qwest Field in 2010, ending a run of eight consecutive seasons in which the Cougs played one game there. The team will be back in 2011, however, when they'll take on UNLV at Qwest, WSU athletic director Jim Sterk said in a statement today.

WSU will play all six home games of the 2010 schedule in Martin Stadium.

"Throughout the past year we have had ongoing discussions with our partners at Qwest Field on continuing our relationship," said Sterk. "However, the way the 2010 nonconference and Pac-10 schedules came together, playing a game in Seattle this year was not feasible.

"We have tremendous support from fans and alumni for our annual game in Seattle, which over the past few years has become known as the Cougar Gridiron Classic presented by Washington's Beef Producers," Sterk said. "While we will miss not playing in Qwest Field this year, we have finalized arrangements with Qwest to return Sept. 10, 2011, when the Cougars will face UNLV. Going forward we look to continue playing a home game in Seattle as the schedule allows."

Sterk said several months ago that he was considering the idea of bringing Oregon to Qwest in 2010, or perhaps Oregon State.

The Cougars drew 42,912 fans to their game at Qwest against Hawaii this past fall. The year before, vs. Oklahoma State, attendance was more than 50,000.

The Cougars open the 2010 season Sept. 4 at Oklahoma State. The regular season concludes after Thanksgiving when the Cougs host Washington on Dec. 4.
