VERBAL: Cougs land fleet Cali safety

LATE WEDNESDAY NIGHT, fleet-footed safety prospect Max Gama thought he was a month or so away from making his college choice. It turns out he didn't need anywhere close to that long to decide. The 6-1, 195-pounder from La Mirada, Calif., tells CF.C he called Paul Wulff on Thursday and pledged crimson.

Max Gama has verbally committed to WSU. He wasn't the only one giving a thumbs up to the Cougs.

"My dad and my coach said, 'Just go for it,'" said Gama. "And I kinda wanted to get it over I just called coach Wulff and committed.

"It's the Pac-10, it's big. I know the program is rebuilding -- and I also know they're building a good team."

Wulff, said Gama, was fired up when he called to tell him he was verbally committing to Washington State and becoming the the third oral pledge in the Cougs' 2011 class.

"He was so stoked. I told him, Hey coach, I want to commit, I just want to be a Cougar.' He was really excited by that. I'm stoked, too. I can't wait to be a Cougar," said Gama.

Gama said he hopes to travel to Pullman later this spring to take in a practice and spend some time on campus. He joins Gonzaga Prep RB Bishop Sankey and Curtis High LB Max Hersey in WSU's 2011 class.

Last night, before he verballed to WSU, Gama told CF.C he had bonded the most this recruiting season with the Wazzu coaches, including area recruiter Malik Roberson.

"I've looked into them a lot and I like them a lot," said Gama. "I like the area and I think very highly of Washington State -- I've really looked at their football team. And it's a great school.

"They said I had a lot of speed and they want me to put me on their defense with their DBs, at safety."

Gama held an offer from Buffalo and Hawaii and Iowa State had indicated they could be close to offering. He was also hearing from UCLA, taking an unofficial trip and spending time talking with Rick Neuheisel a couple weeks ago, and Oregon State, among others.

Gama posted 81 tackles his junior year, with a sack and four pass deflections. He also rushed for 701 yards and seven touchdowns, and caught 25 passes for 331 yards.
