BREAKING: Cougs land 6-foot-3 NW Athlete

HE CAME TO Washington State's summer youth camp without a Cougar offer. His performance changed all that. And after he got that Wazzu offer, he didn't take long to pledge crimson. And so it was that after four Florida prospects verbally committed to Washington State in the space of two days, the Cougs a couple days later landed a 6-foot-3 highly versatile athlete close to home.

Brock Lutes (6.3, 211, 4.59) out of Newberg, about 30 minutes outside of Portland, has gone crimson.

"It's been a good day, I just committed to Washington State so I'm pretty happy about that," said Lutes.

Cougar assistant Dave Ungerer ran the recruiting point on Lutes. The Cougars now have two in the class of 2011 fold from the Beaver State, with Lutes and LB Logan Mayes.

ATHLETIC? A WASHINGTON STATE coach told Lutes after his camp outing he could play as many as six positions. And in basketball, he's excelled for Newberg High as well, garnering serious interest from a number of schools. But he's made the decision he wants to play football in college, and Wazzu fit his plans to a tee.

"They said they were offering me as an athlete. They can see me playing slotback, receiver, outside linebacker or safety. They like my hands. And they like how I love to hit and fly around. One of the coaches said there's about six different positions I can play," said Lutes.

LUTES WAS A one-day camp participant at Washington State's four day camp and not long after his camp performance had ended, he found out he'd earned himself a crimson offer. After he got home, he talked it over with his mom.

"I just kinda fell in love with the campus," said Lutes. "I really like the coaching staff, all the coaches are really down to earth. It was just the perfect fit for me."

Lutes canceled his planned camp outing at Oregon State in the wake of his WSU offer and verbal pledge.

Brock Lutes profile

Lutes becomes the 11th known verbal commitment in Paul Wulff's 2011 class -- the greatest number of verbals in program history at Washington State at this stage of the recruiting year.
