Husky commit gets some good news

After popping up all over recruiting radars this past spring, Juanita (Kirkland, Wa.) TE/DE Jarett Finau became a popular recruit with several schools, but chose to stay close to his family and friends and committed to Washington over the summer. spoke with the talented two-way player following the Rebels' 28-13 win over Mercer Island and he clued us in on some very good news...

"I was hoping to enroll at Washington next January and I had taken some summer courses and loaded up on classes so I could do it, but our second quarter doesn't end until mid January and their winter quarter starts first thing in January so it was going to be too difficult for me to get there then," Finau said. "I am going to enroll early though and because Washington is on the quarter system, I can actually still enroll in March and be there for spring football which is something I really wanted to do."

Finau is an impressive athlete, but it wasn't until he left Marysville-Pilchuck and enrolled at Juanita that he really started to pop on recruiting radar screens.

Offers flowed in, first from BYU, a school he grew up following, and then Utah State, Washington State, Arizona and Hawaii.

Over the summer, the talented two-way player attended two Washington football camps and got an offer from the Dawgs and committed shortly after that.

"It was just the place I wanted to be," Finau said. "I liked the coaches, the players and the atmosphere and it was still close to home for me."

With that type of interest flowing in over the spring and summer, it makes sense that Finau's cell phone blew up on September 1st when college coaches could start calling.

"I rarely answer my phone anymore," Finau said with a slight grin. "My focus is on Washington and I'm not talking to anyone other than them right now.

"I guess USC called my coaches to talk about me and see if I was interested, but I'm sold on what Washington has going on and that's about it."

His team is now 3-0 and facing matchups with 3A powers Liberty and Bellevue in the coming weeks and Finau has put up solid numbers on both sides of the ball -- totaling 3 receptions for 40 yards and a touchdown on offense, while posting 9 tackles and 1.5 sacks on defense.

"I talk to coach (Jeff) Mills a lot and he said they like me on defense and that's where I really like playing," Finau said. "Honestly, I trust them to put me where they think I can be most successful, but playing defense makes me happy is what I am planning on.

"They like me as a rush end and they like my size and athleticism."

This weekend, Juanita faces off against Sammamish on the road before playing host to Liberty and Bellevue on successive weeks to start the month of October.
