Rector likes the Huskies

One of the top skill-position players in the state of Washington this year has been Bellarmine Prep (Tacoma, Wa.) ATH Michael Rector. The talented junior is already getting attention from a few schools including Washington and he said he grew up watching the Huskies and would consider himself a fan...

"I grew up watching the Huskies and Oklahoma since my dad is from there," Rector told following the Lions' big win over Gig Harbor last Friday. "I'm getting letters from Washington, Oregon and Washington State right now, but it's really early."

As a two-way athlete for Bellarmine Prep, Rector has hauled in 41 receptions for 667 yards and 5 touchdowns while posting 25 tackles and 3 interceptions as a corner/safety.

"I like playing offense where I can use my speed," Rector said. "I like playing defense though too because I take it as a challenge to play against the opposing team's best receiver."

Last week, Rector was matched up against Washington-commit Austin Seferian-Jenkins and held the big target to just 3 receptions for 40 yards before Rector gave way to backups on that side of the ball.

With his reported 4.36 speed, Rector said he's going to go out for the track team this coming spring, but had been playing soccer up until now.

"I grew up a soccer player, so that's been the sport I've played most of my life," Rector said. "I'm going to go out for track though now, probably the 100, 200, 400 and 4 x 100 and that will help me work on my speed and quickness and explosiveness."

Rector plans to hit the camp circuit this summer in the hopes of garnering more attention, but he said it isn't out of the question for him to make an early decision.

"If I got offered early by a school that I really liked a lot, I'd think about it, but I want my family to help me make that decision," Rector admitted. "I'll talk to them about it and we will make that decision when the time comes."

This weekend, Rector and his teammates will face Kentridge in the first round of post season play.
