Charles has eyes on the future

One of Washington's three offensive line commits, Stanwood's Dexter Charles, finished his senior season of football last week and he recently told that he's focused on the future and becoming a Husky…

"It ended last week and it's hard to believe actually," Charles told recently. "It went by fast, but overall I felt like I played really well this year and didn't make a lot of mistakes that I made when I was younger."

Charles not only held down the left tackle position for the Spartans this year, he also played a lot of snaps on defense, posting four sacks and an interception that he returned for a touchdown, only to have it brought back on a penalty.

"My teammate blitzed and I thought he was going to get the quarterback, so I just dropped off," Charles said. "Then the quarterback threw it and I just made a play.

"When my teammates were blocking, there was a facemask penalty, so it was called back, but I still got the pick."

On the recruiting front, Charles has four offers – Washington, Washington State, Cal and Arizona – and another Pac 10 school has been picking up the interest.

"USC is real close to offering me," Charles noted. "I've talked to them a couple of times and they are real close to offering, but other than them, it's been pretty quiet.

"I talk to the (Washington) coaches all the time and I was just down there on Monday to see them. I really like coach (Dan) Cozzetto and how he is straight-forward. I feel like he will get the best out of me.

"It's weird to think I won't be playing high school football anymore, but I have next year at U-Dub to look forward to and that has me real excited."

As far as his official visit, Charles said he hasn't even spoken to the coaches about a date yet, but that could be changing in the near future.

"I think they like to bring all the commits in at once or as many as they can," Charles said. "I haven't really even talked about it with them, but I'm sure I will soon."

Charles had participated in track during the spring last year, but said he plans to just focus on working out and getting ready for his arrival at Montlake next summer.
