Downey's Ruffin has UW offer

Up until recently, Downey (Ca.) ATH Jabari Ruffin had gone rather unnoticed by recruiting analysts. However, while his name might be new to recruitniks, he has been on the radar of several schools for quite some time and already has eight offers to his name. Washington was one of the first schools to offer and he spoke with Dawgman.com recently about where things stand at this point in time...

"Washington was the second school to offer me," Ruffin told Dawgman.com recently. "Colorado was the first to offer me and then Washington offered right after that.

"When they offered I was really excited because they've been a school I've been following since I was a sophomore because my real good friend Jesse Callier signed with them.

"Jesse and I played Pop Warner together and have been friends for a long time, so the fact that he went there made me like them a lot and I've been following them the past couple years.

"After they offered then I started to get a lot coming in -- Arizona State, Boise State, USC, Oregon State and Oregon have all offered now and I'm getting a lot of attention from the other Pac 12 schools."

With him being a relatively new fan to the Huskies, does that give them the edge in his recruitment?

"I'd say yeah at this point I'm favoring them, but I'm going to go through the whole process," Ruffin said. "Washington is a school I'm going to visit. I know I will take one of my official visits there and I really want to get up there for an unofficial visit this spring.

"I was thinking about coming up there on February 26th to go see the coaches, but that's coming up quickly so I have to check my schedule and make sure I can go and I also have to start looking for flights."

Ruffin said he plans to visit USC for their Rising Stars camp and may also attend a few others, but was unsure which ones he would go to.

"I love competition and I love getting out and working on my game," Ruffin said. "I really want to see all the schools that like me, but obviously that won't be possible.

"If I go up and visit Washington, I could stay with Jesse and really just get to know the program better."

As a junior, Ruffin was a standout on both sides of the ball for Downey, posting 87 tackles and two sacks for as a linebacker while also hauling in 35 receptions for 593 yards and four scores as a receiver.

"Most schools are looking at me on defense, like a hybrid outside linebacker/defensive end prospect as well as an athlete where I could play offense too," Ruffin said. "Oregon likes me as an athlete and said they could see me on either side of the ball and Washington wants me at linebacker, so does Arizona State.

"USC said they'd like to see me on either side and pretty much everyone else has said that too, but most say defense is where I'd probably be the right fit."

We'll continue to check in with Ruffin in the coming weeks and months and we will update news as it happens.
