Washington says he's a Dawg

After taking in a weekend in Seattle late last month, Orange (Ca.) Lutheran CB Darien Washington went home and thought things over. Earlier this week, the talented defensive back decided he'd heard and seen enough and decided to make a commitment to the University of Washington...

"I verbally committed to Washington," an excited Washington told Dawgman.com. "I called coach (Nick) Holt on Tuesday and then he gave me coach (Steve) Sarkisian's number and I called him and committed.

"They were all really excited and happy that I committed.

"It was all of it. I just wanted to be a Husky. The school was great and I loved Seattle. I also really liked the coaches and the program as a whole."

In addition to his offer from the Huskies, Washington also was getting heavy interest from Colorado, Arizona, Arizona State and some WAC and Mountain West programs.

"I don't see me changing my mind at all," Washington said. "I'm a Husky and I'm really happy about my decision."

As a sophomore at this time last year, Washington tore his labrum and missed the first four games of his junior year last fall in order to let it heal.

"I played through it last year and just gutted it out," Washington said. "They held me out of the first few games because they wanted to make sure I could take the pain and that I wouldn't hurt it any further.

"Once I figured out I could make tackles and not feel it that bad, I just went out and played and I felt like I had a pretty good year considering that."

From his safety position, Washington posted 48 tackles, two interceptions and five passes defensed while earning All-League honors.

"I play safety for us and I like it, but I can play corner pretty well too," Washington said. "I'm explosive and I've been getting faster, so that has helped me a lot."

As a high jumper for the Lancers, Washington has posted an official best of 6'4" and said his most recent vertical was recorded at 34-inches to go along with a 4.45 forty time.
