Austin has arm, will travel

While Jeff Lindquist has gotten most of the attention locally, a player rising up recruiting boards this spring has been Graham-Kapowsin (Graham, Wa.) QB Drew Austin. The talented signal-caller will hit the camp circuit next month in the hopes of impressing coaches enough to earn some scholarship offers...

"Things have been going really well," Austin told "I sorta have an offer from Eastern Washington, but it isn't for sure right now.

"I talked to them and they said they want me to come out there and throw for them in camp before they make it official, so right now I'm still waiting on my first offer."

Quite a few schools have been by Graham-Kapowsin High School this month to take a look at Austin and let him know they are interested.

"There have been a lot of schools by to see me," Austin said. "Washington has been by, Oregon State, Washington State, Eastern and a bunch more.

"I'm going to Washington's Nike Camp and I'm going to Arizona State, UCLA and Washington State for camp and then I'll hit the (Jason) Gesser camp too.

"Our team is heading over to Eastern for our team camp, so I'll throw for them over there when we all go over."

As a junior last fall, Austin led the Eagles to a 6-4 record by completing 61% of his passes for nearly 3,000 yards with 29 touchdowns.

That productivity has led schools to take an interest in what he can do, with Washington making a strong push as well.

"I talked to coach (Doug) Nussmeier and he said they like me, but they want to see what the other quarterbacks they've offered are going to do," Austin said. "They have Jeff (Lindquist) already committed, but they told me they are going to take a second quarterback and I'm right in line for that, depending on what some other guys do.

"They want to see me up at their camp before they do anything.

"Jeff and I have gotten to know each other pretty well over the past year or so and it would be great to come in with him and compete. We have become good friends through the process so I'm not scared to compete at all. I love it and I'd come in there (if he was offered and committed) with the mindset that we are both equal and 'let the best man win'."

We'll continue to keep track of Austin's progress over the next month and we'll update news as it happens.
