Barnes is a fast-riser in the Evergreen State

A player who has started to pop up on recruiting radars this spring has been Ingraham (Seattle) WR/DB Malik Barnes. With his outstanding size and athleticism, Barnes has gotten quite a bit of recruiting interest on both sides of the ball, but he's still waiting on that ever-elusive first offer...

"Things have been going good," Barnes told recently. "I've just been working out, working with my teammates and going to a few camps here and there."

Barnes is a legitimate 6'3", 195 pounds and in June he was at Washington's Skills Camp.

"I worked a lot with coach (Demetrice) Martin," Barnes said. "He really worked on my technique and just spotting the ball better.

"They like my size and how I can go up and get the ball. I play receiver and DB for my team so I have good ball skills and that really helps me in breaking up a play or making a pick."

As a junior in 2010, Barnes put up solid numbers hauling in 14 receptions for 310 yards and two touchdowns including a 93-yarder while posting 57 tackles and four interceptions on defense.

With his size, 4.45 speed and athleticism, Barnes has attracted attention not just from Washington, but several other schools as well.

"Washington is the main one talking to me, but Eastern (Washington), Portland State, Idaho and Oregon State have all been talking to me too," Barnes said. "I haven't heard much from anyone else, but I'm open to anyone that wants to recruit me.

"I'm also getting a lot of looks in basketball too and I love playing that too, so I'm not sure which one I will concentrate on right now."

As a junior shooting guard for the Rams, Barnes averaged 18 points and six rebounds per game.

We will have more from Barnes in the near future as he gets ready to begin his season against Evergreen (Burien) at Highline Stadium on September 2nd.
