Trip Report - Darien Washington

When it comes to Husky commits, one of the most under-the-radar has been Orange (Ca.) Lutheran DB Darien Washington. This weekend he took his official visit to Montlake and got to meet with his new position coach, the recently hired Keith Heyward, and the two spent a lot of time getting to know each other while he was in town...

"I spent a lot of time with coach Heyward, just getting to know him and him getting to know me," Washington told shortly after returning home from his visit. "He talked about his philosophy and how I would fit into it."

That is an interesting topic because Heyward is known for mentoring bigger corners who usually top six-feet tall and all seem to be over 200 pounds.

"He actually was really excited about having me in this class," Washington noted. "He said he liked how I liked to be physical and mix it up. I'm not the biggest guy, but I like contact and I have good instincts and he said that was what he saw when he watched my film."

While on campus, Washington's hosts were Scott Lawyer and Dezden Petty and he said there wasn't a part of his 48 hours on campus that he didn't like.

"I loved it all," Washington admitted. "Probably my favorite part would have to be the snow. I had seen it before, but I'd never seen it like it. It was crazy, but it was fun.

"I also liked hanging out with the guys and meeting all of the other players and spending time with some of the other recruits.

"I also thought it was really cool that they set up a meeting with he head of the business school for me. That's what I want to major in, so it was really great to have that meeting set up so I could get a feel for what it takes to be part of it."

Washington said he has fully qualified and just needs to finish up his coursework at Orange Lutheran this spring and plans to enroll in the LEAP program which begins on July 5th.
