Huskies get in early with Hawkins

One of the top cover corners on the west coast this year promises to be Rancho Cucamonga (Ca.) CB Chris Hawkins and Washington was the first school to extend an offer his way. The talented defensive back spoke with Dawgman.com recently about the offer as well as where he places to the Huskies on his recruiting board...

"I'm up to nine offers right now and a lot of other schools are close to offering," Hawkins told Dawgman.com. "Washington was my first offer. They offered last Tuesday (January 31st) and then a bunch of other schools go into the mix."

The other seven schools are Nebraska, San Diego State, UCLA, Stanford, Boise State, Northwestern, Washington State and California.

While Hawkins doesn't claim a leader, he did say that Washington's early offer will keep them at the top of his list.

"Washington offering me first was big," Hawkins noted. "I like coach (Keith) Heyward and coach Tosh (Lupoi). The fact they were the first ones really means a lot and I really love them for that."

Hawkins said he plans to take an unofficial visit in either the spring or summer to get a close up view of the Washington campus and to meet with the coaches.

While he doesn't claim a leader, he has been a USC fan his entire life.

"My grandpa is a huge USC fan, so they were the school I always followed," Hawkins said. "If they offered, it would be great, but I'm not just going to commit to a school or anything. I want to take my time and really research things and make sure I make the right decision."

As a junior in 2011, Hawkins locked down his side of the ball, posting 56 tackles, two interceptions and double-digit passes defensed while also returning a kick for a touchdown as well as one of his interceptions.

"At our school, it's real tough to play both ways, but I think I'm going to get a chance to do that this year," Hawkins said. "I'll probably end up at wide receiver or in the slot. I think the fact that I have good hands and I play the ball well, that will help me in my coverage game too."

We will have more from Hawkins in the near future as the recruiting process really starts to heat up for him.
