#3 UW 6, Utah 1

Kasey Stanchek fired a three hitter and got all the run support she would need in the first inning as the third ranked Huskies beat the Utah Utes 6-1 in the second game of a three game Pac-12 series at Husky Softball Stadium on a sunny Saturday afternoon. The Huskies (2-0 Pac-12, 31-1) won their 18th straight game and took their first ever conference series against the Utes (0-2, 21-7).

Stanchek (8-0) went the distance in the circle, allowing one run on three hits while walking three and striking out seven.

The Utes got to her for their only run in the top of the first inning. With one out Tia Palauni doubled off the wall in left field and one out later scored on a double by Katelyn Elliott, a drive that went over the outstretched glove of Nikia Williams in right center field and rolled to the wall.

The Huskies wasted no time getting the run back and more in the bottom of the first. Victoria Hayward drew a four pitch walk against Naomi Amu (4-2) and Kimi Pohlman beat out an infield single. Williams drew another four pitch walk from Amu, loading the bases and bringing up cleanup batter Kaitlin Inglesby. Inglesby grounded a sharp single on a 1-1 pitch into left center to plate Hayward and Pohlman, giving the Huskies a 2-1 lead. They made it 3-1 when Hooch Fagaly grounded an opposite field to right to score Williams.

In the second the Huskies scored three more runs. Hayward and Pohlman once again set the table at the top of the Husky order, with Hayward walking on four pitches. Pohlman then laid down a sacrifice that catcher Shay Wallace fielded and threw to second too late to get Hayward. The throw also went into center field for an error, allowing Hayward to take third. Williams walked to load the bases for the second straight inning. Inglesby grounded out to the pitcher, with Hayward scoring, and then Fagaly followed with a single to score Pohlman and Williams.

The Huskies look to sweep the series against the Utes when the two teams play the finale at noon on Sunday. Then the Huskies hit the road for a big series against California in Berkeley from Friday, March 30 to Sunday, April 1.
