All-Star report - Ben Huebschman

It wasn't what Ben Huebschman expected. A 42-6 drubbing at the hands of the West team Saturday afternoon was a nightmare for Ben and the East team, especially considering the East has traditionally been the ones to come away victorious. But it wasn't going to damped his enthusiasm for the experience of being an all-star, not when he has bigger and better things to look forward to.

"Yeah, it was a little frustrating," Huebschman told after the game. "I was hoping it would be a different outcome but I had fun all week. It was a good game and a good experience."

Ben got rattled a couple of times, but for the most part had some solid protection in the pocket. He can thank future teammate Juan Garcia of Yakima AC Davis for helping out. "Juan's a great guy," he said. "Our coach couldn't say enough about him and neither can I. He's a great lineman."

Huebschman and Mountain View teammate James Day (who is deciding between Air Force and Western Washington for college) have been pushing each other in their workouts, trying to simulate what a college workout will be like. "Well, I've been working out a lot, with James especially," Ben said. "Before school got out we were working out in the mornings and now we're trying to get in the rhythm of working out every day. One of our coaches has a minor in sports medicine, so it's like having a trainer with us. I've got to really strengthen up my shoulder. It got a little tweaked on out there.

"I'm throwing a lot. I try to throw with Brig Walker, who's at Evergreen. We try to throw a couple of times a week. I work on dropbacks, footwork, my shoulder strength especially. I want to build up my shoulders. And arm strength too. And I've been doing sprints and plyo's (Plyometrics), trying to win a spot and earn a scholarship."

And he'll be trying to earn a scholarship at the University of Washington. Huebschman's pumped. "Definitely, definitely. I'm really excited," he said. "I can't wait to get up there. I haven't really talked to any of the coaches in a while. Last time was when I was up for spring practices. I saw a couple of practices. But I'm sending them all my stuff and I can't wait."
