Hedges upholds termination

Barbara Hedges, Athletic Director of the University of Washington, upheld Tuesday afternoon her original determination to terminate the contract of embattled football coach Rick Neuheisel. In a letter sent to Neuheisel, Hedges outlined the rest of his options, including a timeline for any actions taken on his behalf.

"On June 11, 2003 I notified you that I had made an initial determination that just cause exists to terminate your employment contract," the letter begins. "As provided in your contract, you were given the opportunity to respond, and you and your lawyers met with me on June 26, 2003. I have carefully considered your response to my initial determination. I have concluded that there is just cause for the termination of your employment contract, based upon all the reasons stated in my June 11 letter. Therefore, I am terminating your employment as Head Football Coach."

Neuheisel has until July 7th to notify the Athletic Department as to whether he will file his final appeal. As per the contents of his contract, he can appeal the Special Assistant to the President, Norm Arkans in an informal hearing. Per Hedges' letter, the '...review process should be completed by July 25, 2003."

Hedges has also determined that Neuheisel will remain on salary through the 25th. It is expected that Neuheisel, through his attorneys, will file for his final appeal with Arkans.
