NFTC Q&A - Chidobe Awuzie

EUGENE, Ore. - One of the top defensive backs at the recent Oregon Nike Football Training Camp was Chidobe Awuzie, a 5-foot-11, 178-pound defensive back from Oak Grove High School in San Jose, Calif. He spoke Sunday with's Kim Grinolds about the event, his strengths as a player, who is recruiting him, and his interest in Washington.

Height and weight - "I'm 5-11, 178."

High school - "I go to Oak Grove High School in San Jose, California."

How did you do? - "I did pretty good."

Corner or safety? - "I play corner and safety."

What do you prefer? - "I prefer corner."

Strengths and weaknesses - "Some of my strengths are pressing, getting into people…hip work, footwork, all that. I'm fast. I turn fast. I do all that stuff…I like to be quick with everything that I do. Saturdays, any free time that I have I'm always on the field getting faster and in every aspect. And my weaknesses, I treat my game like a weakness so I'm always working on it, working on every aspect of my game."

Testing numbers - "My 40 was 4.5. Broad jump is about 10-7."

Track in high school? - "Yeah. My best time in the 200 was 22.7. 400 is 50 flat and long jump is 21-3."

How is recruiting going? - "I have four offers - Utah, Washington State, Utah State and San Diego State."

Is recruiting picking up? - "Yeah, it's picking up. I have a bunch of schools that are recruiting me but haven't offered. They want to see me play more corner. Last year I played safety because I was the tallest of all our DB's."

On camps you're going to? - "Other than this one I went to the Cal camp. I'm going to the 7-7 in Florida - IMG/Madden. And my team is going to be camping at San Jose State team camp."

Who are the other schools recruiting you? - "Cal, USC, UCLA, Stanford, Washington - those are the first off the top of my head."

Who is recruiting you for Washington? - "Coach (Keith) Heyward and coach Joel Thomas. They told me that they are going to recruit me hard and they want me to go to there individual camp. They want to see me play more corner and hopefully they'll offer me."

Do you know anyone at Washington? - "The last two years they had Scotty Lawyer, an outside linebacker, that went from my school. And this coming year, Cleveland Wallace was a corner also, and he's going up there to play football."

Tell me about Cleveland Wallace - "He's fast. I learned a lot playing with him last year. He's an inspiration to a lot of us football players, because he made it out."
