The 12 Plays of Christmas: No. 9

With the holidays upon us, is counting down the top plays of the season, with the No. 1 play to finish out the year. So who is next on the list? This play(s) highlight a couple of maligned Huskies that, for an instant, made plays to help Washington beat one of the top-8 teams in the country. Their names? Travis Coons and Talia Crichton.

There's no question Coons and Crichton have had their moments in 2012 they'd like to forget, namely the last two games of the season. But Coons, the juco kicker from Alta Loma, Calif. and Crichton, from Lakewood, Calif., also had times where they exceeded expectations. Coons, for example, showed his ambidextrous side twice in 2012, punting the ball out of danger with his left foot. But Coons and Crichton arguably did their best work against Oregon State, helping to hand the Beavers a 20-17 loss at CenturyLink Field.

Coons had hit a 45-yard field goal to start out the Washington scoring against Oregon State, and he bookended that effort with another from 30 yards that proved to be the final margin of victory. And just to salt the game away, Crichton, the 6-foot-3, 264-pound senior defensive end, came up with his lone sack of the year on a 3rd-and-10 play with 25 seconds left as Oregon State was driving in UW territory.

That sack, coupled with a delay of game penalty coming out of a timeout, pushed Oregon State back to the UW 47 yard line, where a Cody Vaz pass to Kevin Cummings came up incomplete on 4th-and-19. All the Huskies had to do then was line up in victory formation and the game was theirs.

Coons was a player pressed into double duty early in the season because of the ineffectiveness of true freshman punter Korey Durkee. How that may have effected his placekicking duties - he finished the year 8-13 with his long of 45 coming in the OSU win - is tough to tell. But his chip-shot effort to give Washington the lead against the Beavers was as true as any kick all year.
