Cali defender plans trip to Montlake

At this time of the year, players start to pop up out of nowhere and this year, one player who many in recruiting circles hadn't even heard much about is Lincoln (San Diego, Ca.) LB/DE Fred Melifonwu. The talented defender currently has nine offers and he told Dawgman.com recently that he plans to visit Washington at some point next month...

"It's been kinda hectic as far as offers and setting up my visits," Melifonwu told Dawgman.com recently. "I have offers from Washington, Washington State, Oregon State, Nevada, Hawaii, Colorado, Colorado State, San Diego State and I think Arizona State has offered, but I am not sure on that one.

"I've got an official visit set up with Nevada on January 18th and I will visit Hawaii the first weekend of February (1st - 3rd).

"I'm planning on visiting Washington, but I haven't set the date yet. I spoke to coach (Tosh) Lupoi last week about it, but we haven't come up with a date that will work yet.

"Other than that, I'm deciding who my final two visits will be and I'll set those up next month when I can talk to the coaches."

As a senior this past season, Melifonwu used his considerable athleticism to rack up 82 tackles and 13 sacks, earning First Team All-League and All-Area, and he said most schools want him to rush the quarterback.

"I sorta played a hybrid linebacker defensive end spot and that's where most of the coaches that are recruiting me see me playing," Melifonwu noted. "I love to rush the quarterback. It's so satisfying to get to him and disrupt plays, but also to help set my team up for wins. That's the most important thing."

We will continue to keep track of Melifonwu and will update news as it happens with him.
