Husky commit discusses his decision

It was a bit of a surprise to those on the outside looking in when McClymonds (Oakland, Ca.) S Lavon Washington, but he told recently that he has been a huge fan of the Husky program and especially defensive backs coach Keith Heyward for a while...

"It was a great time for me up there," Washington told after returning home from Seattle earlier this week. "I had a great time up there. It's beautiful, I loved the stadium and I've always loved the program and coach Heyward is a great coach and a great guy, so I knew that I wanted to be a part of what they are building there."

As a junior this past fall, Washington posted 21 receptions for 653 yards and 11 touchdowns on offense while racking up 83 tackles, four interceptions and six passes defensed from his safety spot.

"One thing I like to do is hit," Washington admitted. "I love to be physical and make plays on the ball when it's in the air.

"I think playing receiver helps me a lot on defense because I can track the ball well and I'm used to catching it, so when I have the opportunity to get a pick I can do it."

Washington chose the Huskies over offers from Arizona State, California, Oregon State, San Diego State and San Jose State.

"It was just the right fit for me," Washington said. "My mom was there and she loved it too and she was really happy for me and gave her blessing for me to commit. The Washington coaches really take care of their guys and you have that family atmosphere there. I just can't wait to get there."

Washington said he doesn't plan to take any other trips to see schools and hopes to take a visit to Montlake again during the season before signing his letter-of-intent in February.
