Marquese Chriss has three in mind

One of Washington's top hoops targets for 2015 is Marquese Chriss, a 6-foot-9, 200-pound power forward from Pleasant Grove High School in Elk Grove, Calif., and Chriss is reciprocating that interest. With nearly a dozen offers to his name, Chriss has already started to narrow things down a bit in the recruiting process.

"The season is going alright," Chriss told late this week. "It's a learning experience in the pre-season, just getting our whole team together because we're a young team so far."

Chriss said he's averaging roughly 20 points and 10 rebounds so far during his high school season. What has improved in his game? "Probably my scoring this year, kind of mid-range to inside," he said. "I've been aggressive because I'm kind of being pushed into a new role of having to actually score this year. Last year I didn't have to as much but this year I do. It's enjoyable because I'm just going with the flow, I guess. It just comes easy. I don't have to think about scoring, it just happens."

When talk turns to recruiting, Chriss knows he's got a lot of great opportunities lining up to get his signature on a letter of intent. "I'm not sure how many I have right now," he said when asked about scholarship offers. "I think it's a little more than 10." Chriss added that offers from Washington, Arizona, USC, Cal, Sacramento State, Arizona State, LMU, NAU, Vanderbilt, and Cal-Poly are the ones he remembers off the top of his head.

Just because he's not tallying up offers, don't get the impression Chriss is overwhelmed with recruiting. "It's still manageable," he said. "My Mom and I talked to them and said it would be more reasonable to get texts instead of calling all the time. I can respond easier to the texts."

Chriss added that Washington, Vanderbilt and USC are the teams right now showing the most interest and are the programs he's focused on the most at this point in time. He will officially visit Washington a week from now.

Chriss has already taken unofficial visits to Cal and UNLV and has no other official visits set right now. "I don't really have a plan, I'm just kind of going with it," he said.

The Pleasant Grove power forward has always been a good student. "My grades are good," he said. Chriss wants to major in electrical engineering. "Washington's is pretty good and I'm pretty sure Vanderbilt's good," he added.
