Trip Report - Drew Sample

Shortly after Chris Petersen took over as the head coach at Washington, he went about offering Newport (Bellevue, Wa.) TE Drew Sample, a local prospect who promptly committed shortly afterward. spoke to the talented player recently and he said his official visit to Montlake couldn't have gone better...

"Oh man, it was awesome. I had a great time over there and it just made me even more happy that I'm going there next year," Sample told shortly after returning home. "My host was Sean Constantine and he showed me around and we had a good time.

"I knew him a little, I think I had met him once, so it was good to get to know him better and also some of the other players."

As far as the highlight of his trip, Sample said it had to be the facilities.

"It had been a while since I had been there, so the facilities were definitely impressive," Sample said. "I hadn't been over there since they finished things. It's amazing over there with all of the stuff they have to support the players. I was really impressed."

Sample said he was happy to play for the hometown school and that he talked with the coaches about playing in their offense.

"Coach Petersen said he thinks the tight end is really important to their offense, so he's going to use the tight end a lot," Sample said. "They like how I can be a good receiver down the field, but also set the edge in the run as a blocker too. They want the tight end to be able to do everything, so you have to be on top of things."

Coeur d'Alene (Id.) TE Chase Blakley also remains committed to the Huskies and Sample said he and the Idaho product are both excited to play together.

"Chase and I camped at U-Dub together and at the Northwest Elite camp and the NFTC, so we've known each other for a while," Sample said. "Before I committed, he and I talked about things and we're excited to play together and we know we will push each other."

Sample said he plans to make trips over to Montlake the next two weekends, if his basketball schedule permits, to help with the recruiting efforts when the other official visitors are in town.
