Shelton Takes Home 107th Guy Flaherty Award

Senior nose tackle Danny Shelton won the 107th annual Guy Flaherty Award, the Washington football program's oldest and most prestigious team award, while Dwayne Washington, Shaq Thompson, Hau'oli Kikaha and Travis Feeney won Most Outstanding Player honors at the Husky football team’s postseason awards banquet.

Shelton, from Auburn, Wash., established himself as one of the nation's top defensive linemen while also earning first-team Academic All-America this season. A three-year starter, Shelton also won the 101 Club Academic Excellence Award (shared with Kikaha) and the L. Wait Rising Defensive Lineman of the Year awards. The Guy Flaherty Award, given to the UW's most inspirational player and voted on by the players, was first awarded in 1908.

Washington, a sophomore tailback from Cerritos, Calif., was named the Most Outstanding Offensive Player. The Huskies' leading rusher and leading touchdown scorer fought of midseason injury to be the main force in the UW's wins over Oregon State and Washington State to close out the season. His 51-yard TD run on the Dawgs' second play at Washington State also earned him the Apple Cup Play of the Game award.

Thompson, a junior linebacker from Sacramento, Calif., and Kikaha, a senior buck linebacker from Laie, Hawai'i, shared Most Outstanding Defensive Player honors. Thompson led the nation with four defensive touchdowns and four fumble recoveries while Kikaha is the nation's sacks leader with 18. Kikaha, a first-team Academic All-District VIII selection, also shared the 101 Club Academic Excellence Award with Shelton.

Feeney, a junior from Richmond, Calif., won the Most Outstanding Special Teams Player. The linebacker was a regular on all of the special teams units and finished the season with 57 total tackles.

Senior offensive lineman Colin Tanigawa (Los Angeles, Calif.), won the John P. Angel Offensive Lineman of the Year while cornerback Sidney Jones (Diamond Bar, Calif.) and safety Budda Baker (Bellevue, Wash.) shared the Travis Spring Freshman of the Year.

Senior linebacker John Timu (Long Beach, Calif.) was honored with the Chuck Niemi Big Hit Award while senior tailback Deontae Cooper (Perris, Calif.) was presented the Earle T. Glant Tough Husky Award.

The Husky Fever 12th Man Award was presented to senior defensive lineman Drew Schultz (Olympia, Wash.), senior defensive end Andrew Hudson went home with the Academic Achievement Award and senior wide receiver Kasen Williams was the winner of the Don James Perseverance Award.

The Bob Jarvis Offensive Scout Squad Player of the Year went to freshman wide receiver quarterback K.J. Carta-Samuels (Saratoga, Calif.), the Mark Drennan Defensive Scout Squad Player of the Year was given to senior cornerback Jonathan Kwon (Kent, Wash.) and the Brian Stapp Special Teams Scout Squad Player of the Year Award was presented to sophomore defensive back Hayden Schuh (Vancouver, Wash.).

For their work in the weight room, Andrew Hudson and freshman offensive lineman Matt James picked up the Iron Husky and Ultimate Greenhorn awards, respectively.

Finally, senior wide receiver DiAndre Campbell was named winner of the Tyee Sports Council Community Service Award and the Kurt Gegner Memorial Award, given to student staff members, went to Dan Brusic (equipment), Michael Langsen (video), Josh Pahang (training room)
