OL Robert Chai Update

Robert Chai (say ‘ch-EYE') plays left tackle on the offensive line for Newport Harbor High School in Newport Beach, California. He stands 6-4, weights 270, and has the attention of some Pac-10 schools.

Chai is considered a very polished offensive lineman. "I'm pretty coached up," is how Chai describes it. "I play hard and use good technique."

His 305-pound bench and 360 pound squat marks were solid for a high school junior, especially when you combine them with his flair for doing things correctly.

A soft-spoken young man on the phone, Chai undergoes a transition when he reaches the football field. "I'm pretty different out there than I am away from it. I turn mean," said Chai.

Tom Holmoe from California is recruiting the hardest right now followed by WSU. Nebraska, UCLA, and Washington are also showing considerable interest. Brent Myers is recruiting the Newport Beach lineman for the Huskies.

Washington phoned him today. "They want me to take a recruiting trip up there."

Both Cal and WSU have offered scholarships. He will visit both of those schools for sure and keep his options open from there.

The Bears early interest appears to have paid dividends for Cal, as he is calling them his leader at this point.

He has not committed anywhere and doesn't appear to be in any hurry. "I'll probably commit either midway through the season, or maybe after, but no earlier."
