Atewe Set To Transfer To UW

After visiting Washington this past weekend, Matthew Atewe made a quick decision - he will transfer to Washington. The 6-foot-9, Canadian center, who played his last two years at Auburn, will transfer to Montlake with three years to play three with an excellent chance of playing in 2015.

Here was Atewe's tweets early Monday morning that sealed the deal.

Typically a transfer would have to sit out a year per NCAA rules, but Atewe - who has been injured a substantial amount of time during his freshman and redshirt freshman years at Auburn - has been advised to request a waiver so that he could skip missing any additional time.

“People are telling me all I have to do is file a waver because I was hurt and I should be able to play immediately," Atewe told last week. "I have three years of eligibility left.”

With Washington granting transfer requests to Nigel Williams-Goss, Darin Johnson, and Gilles Dierickx, there were glaring holes in the Huskies' potential 2015-16 roster, but Atewe fills a big need inside. “Just a big, physical presence,” he said last week, matter-of-factly. “When healthy I can sprint the floor, block shots, rebound, score in the post a little bit.” While blocking shots is his favorite thing to do, Atewe admits that he’s got the reputation of being a tough guy on the court. “Everyone says on the court I play angry and mean,” he added. “And I play hard.”

Atewe told Dawgman before his official visit that it was his relationship with former Auburn Head Coach Tony Barbee that took him to the SEC, and that his early talks with Washington Head Coach Lorenzo Romar were a big reason why he was interested in moving west. “That’s what intrigued me the most, just how real he is and how he doesn’t sugar-coat anything," Atewe said of Romar after his official visit. "He’s a real straightforward guy, and that’s the type of person I am.”

We'll have more on Atewe's commitment after we speak to him, as well as an impact report detailing how his presence will impact a revamped Washington lineup for this upcoming season.
