VIDEO: Washington Tight Ends Coach Jordan Paopao - Bye Week

Washington Tight Ends Coach Jordan Paopao spoke to the media Thursday during the Huskies’ bye week about his group, what they’ve done well through four games, what they need to work on, as well as the development of true frosh Mike Neal as UW gets ready to go on the road and play the USC Trojans a week from Thursday.

On what he’s worked on with Mike Neal this bye week “The biggest thing in terms of Mike (Neal)’s development is just trying to get his blocking fundamentals back in order. He’s spent a lot of time with the scout team, so it’s really good to be able to get back to basics and really just get him used to playing in the cylinder again. He’s a guy that’s going to take some time to develop. Just making sure we stay patient with that and hopefully just continue to get better week-to-week.”

On how a short bye week changes what he tries to get accomplished “It’s just going to be about us. It really is getting back to basics, making sure we get our base install in and then just continuing to play really, really fast has been the biggest emphasis the whole entire time. In the tight end room, really making sure we become as well rounded blockers and pass catchers as we possibly can, and again, really just the emphasis is on us.”

On what he’s been most pleased with and what the group needs to work on most “Everybody’s got their own individual things that they need to work on, but what I’ve been really pleased with is the personnel groups that we’ve been able to utilize during the year and getting a lot of different people on the field, really kind of emphasizing their highlights, and also getting a lot of good playing experience for a lot of young guys like Drew Sample and David Ajamu and even Darrell Daniels has gotten a substantial amount of reps. I think Josh Perkins is going to continue to carry the load just in terms of leadership and playing time and getting the majority of the reps, but ultimately having him to be there to guide those guys has been a unique kind of experience.” Top Stories
