VIDEO: Washington Defensive Tackle Tani Tupou Bowl Announcement Briefing

Washington Senior Defensive Tackle Taniela Tupou spoke to the press Sunday after it was announced that the Huskies would face Southern Mississippi in the Heart of Dallas Bowl on Saturday, December, 26th at the Cotton Bowl.

Looking back, how impressive was the defense’s performance during the season? “It was kind of impressive, but at the same time we just took this year with a chip on our shoulder. A lot of people doubted us but at the end of the day just put your hand in the dirt and play - and whatever happens, happens. We just gave it our all. Our motto all year was, All They Want is All We Got. We just laid it all out on the line, and everything will be alright.”

How do you keep the chip on your shoulder with so much time before your next game? “We’ve just got to go. That’s it. Like Coach K always says, it’s a mindset. In everything we do, we’ve just got to think about the game. We just want to play. That’s it.”

Have finals? Graduated already? “I do have a couple finals. Just one or two more classes left. Then I’ll be done.”

Reaction to being named All-Pac-12 “I’ll be honest with you; I was surprised by it. Actually Travis Feeney texted me and he said hey, congrats. I texted him back. Congrats on what? (laughs) He was like, you made second team. I was oh wow! At the end of the day I was just thankful. I called my Mom afterwards and told her about it. I’m just blessed and thankful to be here. I just tried to do everything I could in my power to get it.”

Was it something coming into the season you had set as a goal? “Actually no. Coming into the season I just wanted to play football and bring everyone else up around me. And just play for my brothers next to me. With that happening at the end of the season, it was a bonus. It was a plus. I was grateful for it.”

How big is it you were able to go to five bowl games in your five years? “It was really important. We’ve always spent the holidays together as a team and for us as seniors we wanted to go out with a bang, go to one last bowl game together. When we learned that we were going to go to it, everyone was really excited.”

Has your family thought at all about going to Texas for Christmas? “All the family is coming already. I’ve got family in Hawaii making their tickets right now. Family in Hawaii, California, Texas - everyone’s coming to the game.”
