Husky defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski talks about Washington's 44-31 win over Southern Miss in the Heart of Dallas Bowl caught up with Washington defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski following his team's big 44-31 win over Southern Miss in the Heart of Dallas Bowl...

On USM - “We were going to do what we’ve been doing; play tight coverage and try and get rush with four guys and whether it’s a ‘backer or four d-linemen. They’ve got some good receivers. 88 (Michael Thomas) is a hell of a player and he hurt us a couple times. We expected it. They’re a really good offense. We expected it going in and we kept banging away and kept competing and we got the W.”

Put the win into perspective - “We kept getting better every week. They came with that mentality to get better every week. When we hit a low spot and we lost they didn’t dwell on it. They went to the next game and kept getting better. It’s a credit to the guys and their toughness and their fight through all that. I really feel like…all bowl games are like that. We got the W so we’re happy about that, but I know defensively I know some guys feel like we could have played better. The layoff and tackling and all that stuff…we’ve got to learn from this one and head to the next one.”

7-6 has to feel better than 6-7 - “Oh yeah. Anytime you win your bowl game it gives you a little juice going into the off-season. You’re excited.”

Is it even more because this group is relatively young? - “I would hope so. There were so many games that we could have finished. This is one of those games that was going back and forth and we found a way to get it done. On to next year now.” Top Stories
