You were down to about 200 pounds when you arrived as a freshman? “Yeah. I wrestled state last year at about 195 so I’m up to about 230 now.”
How hard was it to put the weight back on? “Getting back to about 210 was pretty natural, that’s probably right around where my natural weight is. All the lifting we do and we get fed all the time, it wasn't too hard to put on the weight, especially over the past year.”
Is it the Budda Baker eating plan or Tevis Bartlett eating plan? “It’s the Tevis Bartlett weight plan.”
How much easier are things for you as a sophomore? “They’re coming along a lot easier. Things feel a lot better. Instead of playing quarterback, safety, now it’s a full season of outside linebacker and being in our defense and knowing our calls and that stuff. It’s a lot easier to react and play than think.”
Do you ever ask Pete for a wildcat package for you at QB? “No. I figured I’ll get everything on defense first and if that stuff comes along that’s fine but if not I’ll just worry about defense.”
What position are you? “In our base defense I’m SAM linebacker and then in our nickel I’m playing the JACK, which is like the edge rusher.”
Are you more comfortable with one? “They’re just different. SAM is a lot more your traditional outside linebacker while JACK is your outside pass rusher. So they’re just different.”
How comfortable are you compared to last year? “Way more comfortable with the defense and everything. I don’t know if I’m comfortable in terms of being okay with where I’m at I’m still getting better everyday and working to be the best that I can be.”
On picking on Sean McGrew a little today “It’s always good to have those guys out there because that’s the speed we’re playing at out there and it’s good for them to get used to it.”
On practice today “Day 8 kind of gets grueling so for us to have that energy and that kind of focus was great for us today.”
