Did you talk about just running the ball and taking it to half before the turnover? “We had talked about it. We wanted to take one or two shots just to give it a shot. We had talked about it. At the end of the day I was hot on that and my job is just to not make a bad play worse. So I should have just taken a sack or launched it out of bounds. That;s obviously on me.”

How quickly did they close in on you? “They’re a good defense. They can get in a quarterback’s head. I don’t think they did that necessarily. You definitely have to get rid of the ball pretty quickly. They have elite pass rush guys. I think we did a pretty good job with that overall. You have to make a couple more plays and turnovers. When8 you play a good team like that, that’s really what it comes down to. They beat us in the turnover game.”

On his interception “He was a defensive end. I saw him. Just split second decision. Just threw it, maybe to make a play, but I should have just thrown it out of bounds or taken the sack and gone into half time.”

On excitement about the future “Yeah, but we’re not thinking about that right now. We’re more thinking about the Darrell Daniels and the people that really took me under their wing when I first got here as a guy that’s supposed to still be in high school. I remember my locker being right next to Darrell’s and Darrell kind of showing me the ropes and stuff like that. Or a Kevin King, a great personality and someone that’s just electric in the locker room as well as on the field. Just a good guy. I think, like I said before multiple times, to come into the program the way they did, not too far removed from a winless season, and to leave it how it is now. They really set the stage for some of the younger guys and myself to try to take this program to the next level.”

Do you feel like you were a break or two from possibly winning? “Yeah. When two good teams like that are playing, and our defense pretty much shut them down; I think they really only had one play. Really just came down to executing on offense and not turning the ball over. Turned the ball over twice. I think they got 10 points out of it. That will kill you. Ended up being a 17 point game.”

Was it a bittersweet end to the season? “Yeah, it sucks right now. It is what it is. I don’t think anyone is really saying that they feel great right now, but a couple days this will wash away. We’ll see the film. I think this takes it. You want to say thanks to the seniors and all that, but for a lot of young guys and everybody coming back you have to build on top of this. This is the best team in the nation right now and the hottest team in the nation, kind of the program that has run college football. We’re a couple plays away. You have yourself on film playing against the best. There aren’t many teams we’re going to see that are better than that. Now just building on top of that.”`

How did Alabama compare in person to what they looked like on film? “They were as good as they were on film. We thought they were good coming in. We had to answer a million questions about them being good so we all knew they were good. We just have to make a couple more plays here and there and not turn the ball over. Not to take that away. That’s a very good team. I think they’re going to go on and obviously they’re playing in the National Championship game now. So they’re a very good team, been a very good team. But I thought we were in it. A couple more plays here and there. That’s a good team.”

Does this game give you confidence about belonging at this level? “I felt like we belonged the whole time, so my mindset really hasn’t changed at all.”

What did coach Petersen say post game? “I think he just said - he’s not a big pregame, postgame speech guy. He’s going to tell you a few things. He just thanked the seniors and told us young guys be ready to go. That’s the new standard. Alabama is the type of program that we want to have at Washington. That’s the new standard. Be ready for the offseason.”
